Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dave Baker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Dave thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Going on any creative journey begins with taking a risk. You’re going to take time away from love-ones or more financially lucrative endeavors to try and make something new happen. I feel like that can be said about every comic I’ve ever made. As a dyed in the wool cartoonist, I’ve been making comics since I was a teenager. Some of them have panned out and some of them… not so much. But I will say that when things are working, you can feel it. I first met the artist Nicole Goux at a gallery show in Culver City and I knew almost immediately that we should make something together. Money was tight and neither of us had really any real professional comics experience, but after some smaller projects we co-created the book F*ck Off Squad. We self-published three issues of the book, and toured the country selling it at conventions. Basically everything positive that’s happened in both of our career comes directly from this risk of self publishing, believing in ourselves, and choosing to build something together.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Dave Baker and I’m originally from Arizona. I’ve been making and self-publishing comics since I was a teenager. I’ve written the books Everyone Is Tulip, F*ck Off Squad, Forest Hills Bootleg Society, Star Trek: Seven’s Reckoning, Night Hunters, and Halloween Boy.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
They’re stupid. No Thanks.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love seeing the look on readers faces when they open the book at a convention and realize it’s something they’re interested in. There’s no feeling like it in the world.
