We recently connected with DaShean Porter and have shared our conversation below.
DaShean, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned to do what I do simply by studying the artists/ creatives that I admire. A few things that I could’ve done to speed up my learning process would be putting myself on a schedule where I make time daily to study and search for information that I feel I need to know.
The skills that I think were most essential are focus, commitment, and persistence.
Obstacles that stood in my way.. Hmm, I’d definitely have to say myself. I can’t blame anyone else for my mishaps to be honest. I take full responsibility for either losing focus or sight of the vision at the time.

DaShean, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Absolutely! I’m an all-around creative; singer-songwriter and engineer to be exact. I do a little more than that but that’s what I’m mostly known for.
I feel the thing that sets me apart from others is the fact that I embrace my individuality and I only do what feels genuine and true to me. No matter how big, small, or uncommon it is.
I’m most proud of my growth overall. As a person and as an artist. I’ve been on this journey for some time and it’s been a pretty difficult ride. I honestly had to take my mind off of the destination and enjoy the expedition. Once I became conscious of that, my day-to-day became more peaceful and I found it easier to focus on doing things that were organic to me. I’m currently gearing up to release my project ‘Everything’s Lovely’ top of 2023 and I’m stoked to share what I’ve been creating.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely! I started my journey as a creative almost 10 years ago. I’ve seen the industry go through so many changes, good and not-so-good and I’m still in pursuit and have no desire to slow down. I have a strong desire to travel the world and share my creations with those who admire what I do and also connect/ impact those who may not be familiar with me just yet.
I would also say the thing that’s driving me now is the fact that my mom passed away in April of this past year, she always had ultimate belief in me and saw nothing but great things for me. Her passing caused a shift within me. I’m still searching for answers and understanding, but I just know now isn’t the time to overthink, slow down, or give in. I have to stay the course.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I would say the biggest lesson I had to unlearn is that not everyone is going to believe in you or your journey the same way you do no matter how good or dope you are. Everyone isn’t meant to be a part of your process. That solely came from personal experience. It’s like working for a million dollars versus giving someone a million dollars, the appreciation and care are just different.
