We were lucky to catch up with Dash Kwiatkowski recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dash, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I created Liminal, a paranormal investigation docuseries that I co-host, about the connection between queerness and transness and the High Strange and the Magical. I have been working on this show for around 5 years and our pilot episode has won awards at film festivals all over the world. In the first season of the docuseries I try to highlight queer and trans people in the rural american south, as I don’t believe their stories are heard and celebrated enough.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a mixed-race non-binary trans paranormal investigator. I have been experiencing magical phenomenon for my entire life. When I finally began to explore the world of the magical and the strange I found that paranormal investigating fit like a glove, and I haven’t looked back since. I began pursuing this after over a decade of being a touring stand up comedian.
I try to approach paranormal investigation in a way that is introspective and earnest, avoiding jump-scares and other staged content for my docuseries. As a result Liminal ends up being more genuine and thoughtful than a lot of other investigation shows. I am incredibly proud of the wide variety of voices that my show gives a platform to who would not necessarily have a platform on other ghost shows.
I genuinely believe that queerness is magical, in a literal and metaphorical sense, and my show explores the idea that our identity is tied to incredible, otherworldly experience.
I addition, I believe that a lot of americans, especially on the coasts, don’t understand the incredible thriving queer and trans communities that exist in the rural american south, so it is a personal mission of mine to highlight them.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I am a trans creator and my goal is to create the content that I wish existed when I was young. I want to show young trans people that they can grow into trans adults. I want to create media that resonates with people. I want to create a show that matters to people in a deep and earnest way.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I spent ten years as a stand up comedian, and when the pandemic began I had to take a lot of time to think about that career. I had been feeling burned out for a long time based on how toxic the industry is, and how much really harmful and terrible ideologies are supported by the power structure, and that combined with the beginning of the pandemic made me realize it was time to pursue something I had been excited about and curious about for years: Paranormal Investigation, and I dove in head first and have not looked back.
