We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daryl Smith Sr. a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Daryl, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Our story
In 2011, Daryl Smith started his first business, Wing Xpress, a mobile Foodtruck based in Houston Texas. Graduating from Texas Southern University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing. He used his experience in college to bring his dreams of starting a business to life, having a huge popularity among college and celebrity clientele.
In 2014, He decided to join forces with a hometown entrepreneur Bernardo Baxter in San Antonio, Tx. Fusing both of their popular wing trucks into one brand name called WINGIT.
Stumbling upon an old restaurant location in Kirby, Texas they opened their first brick and mortar.
All from a class project from his entrepreneurial class he has managed to built an empire that continues to grow and expand across the nation.
The logic behind it all derived from my college experiences knowing I created a business on paper it pushed me to want to bring it to fuition.
The problem I saw early on was that there was no mobile wing delivery places around I wanted to jump in that market
What was unique at the time was that we were delivering before the DoorDashs and Ubers of the world
Daryl, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When it comes to our business we are in the the “Wing game.” We compete with the wingstops and Buffalo Wild Wings of the world. Starting out we both me and my partner operated solely off of food trucks. Since evolving in 2014 we’ve expanded to 4 wingit restaurants at one point and 10 franchised and corporate Drive through daiquiri businesses. With our wing brand wingit we sell a variation of wing flavors like spicy lemon pepper, Cajun ranch, bacon cheese fries and Pineapple Lemonade. Our sister company Sipt that we started during the pandemic offers a variety of alcoholic and no alcoholic beverages.
We try to use social media to be creative during this period of our business leaning on influencers and trendy sparks to drum up business.
Some of the big issues in our line of work is the lack of staffing. Nowadays people aren’t wanting to work like they use to. We could interview 5 people on phone but 1 actually show up for in person interviews. That is the biggest issue in our line of work. We resulted to self service features like QR code serves to get through at some locations.
What im most proud of is not giving up sticking with our business despite diversity. We will be 10 years in April;
What I would tell any follower and fan is to keep riding with us the Best is yet to come!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Marketing has been our biggest source of success. When we started in the beginning I use to stick menus at apartments and dorms nearby to push delivery. Word of mouth is powerful we stayed busy
Have you ever had to pivot?
We pivoted during the pandemic not knowing what to expect we had to lean on delivery and online sales. Our alcohol business saved us and took our businesses to next level
