We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Darya Khoshgoo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darya, thanks for joining us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
I currently divide my time between Toronto and Mérida, Mexico, understanding the importance of taking regular breaks as a creative professional to prevent burnout. To maintain a seamless flow in my business, I ensure I have extra content prepared for my social media while also continuing to serve clients in Mexico.
Though it can be challenging to leave Toronto, especially with the city’s vibrant runway events, I remind myself that as an entrepreneur, it is crucial to step away from work and prioritize personal time. I believe that as a self-made business owner, experiencing new environments and exploring different cultures is essential to sparking creativity and maintaining a fresh perspective on my craft.

Darya, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a highly skilled and versatile hairstylist, I specialize in a wide range of services, including runway styling, photoshoots, bridal styling, and personalized haircuts, color treatments, and braids for my individual clientele. My journey in the hairstyling industry began five years ago when I attended a reputable hairstyling school. After completing my apprenticeship, I became a licensed hairstylist in Toronto.
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working on major events in Toronto, such as Fashion Art Toronto and the Vegan Fashion Show. Additionally, I have contributed to numerous editorial shoots for high-profile models in the fashion industry. My work has also been featured in prestigious publications, including Vogue Mexico, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar Australia.
With a passion for creativity and a commitment to excellence, I continue to provide top-tier services that meet the unique needs of each client and project I take on.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth is often the most effective method for acquiring new clients. Additionally, I actively network at runway events and collaborate on projects with other creatives and models. On occasion, they are impressed with the quality of my work and subsequently choose to become clients.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One important lesson I’ve learned is that everyone’s journey is unique. I was often told that the only path to success as a hairstylist was to work full-time in a salon. However, my determination and talent proved otherwise. Through hard work and perseverance, I carved my own path in the industry. I realized that success doesn’t always follow a prescribed blueprint. Each person has their own vision, and it’s important not to let anyone diminish your dreams. Believe in yourself and trust your own journey.
