We were lucky to catch up with Darya recently and have shared our conversation below.
Darya , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s go back in time to when you were an intern or apprentice – what’s an interesting story you can share from that stage of your career?
My internship had a profound impact on my life and provided a much-needed positive change during a challenging period. Despite dealing with personal issues, I was fortunate to secure an internship as a social media intern in the spring of 2021 while attending school full-time. Working with exceptional mentors, one particular experience that stood out was assisting with a fundraising event. The heartfelt story I encountered was from a domestic violence survivor. During this event deeply moved me and forever transformed my perspective. Through this internship, I gained valuable skills in content creation and scheduling, which greatly enhanced my abilities. I learned about what team work is, and I always felt joy walking into the office.

Darya , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My interests and roles span across various domains. Currently, I work as a full-time Marketing and Communications Coordinator at a non-profit organization. I got into my role by accident, and it wasn’t planned or expected, but I’m so grateful. My responsibilities encompass managing social media platforms, crafting and distributing emails, and establishing partnerships. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job is the opportunity to meet and be inspired by domestic violence survivors, who continually motivate me. Additionally, I pursue a part-time career as a makeup artist, finding immense joy in the artistry involved. Witnessing the delight on my client’s faces when I complete their look is truly rewarding. Lastly, I engage in creating online content, including reels, fashion posts, and hair videos, as it allows me to express my creative side. I’ve also met many friends through social media and I’m so blessed that social media has opened a lot of doors for many people. I’m most proud of never giving up and my drive. No matter what happens in my personal life, I always keep going. I want my potential clients or followers to know that I will do everything if there is a purpose or meaning behind it.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
“The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson had a profound impact on my life. I encountered this book at the age of 17, and it arrived at the perfect moment when I was feeling lost and searching for direction in terms of my career path. In a society that often dictates what we should do, this book provided the guidance and insight I needed. Sometimes in life we think that we need to make a drastic change, and that freaks 99.9% of the population out. Myself included. This book taught me small improvements in your everyday life will make a huge difference. This is the philosophy that I live by now, and I’m able to enjoy life to the fullest. This book has helped me in my professional and personal life.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe that one of the key factors in establishing my reputation, despite it sounding cliché, is practicing kindness. Often, people mistakenly perceive kindness as a sign of weakness, but I firmly believe that being kind is essential for building a positive reputation. I consistently make a conscious effort to demonstrate kindness towards my clients and people. People want to feel seen and heard, I think that meeting deadlines and being on time builds my reputation within my market. In other words, professionalism goes a long way, and people will notice.
