We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darsheena Doss. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darsheena below.
Darsheena , appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
I believe that one of my best qualities of my business that differs from others like it is that I provide a comfortable atmosphere for my clients to have time for themselves. I do this by not over booking. Which is very common in the beauty industry. Their appt time is just that. Theirs. When they come in for their appt they may have had a crazy day at work, may have had a rough and busy day taking care of their families. What ever it may be. When they enter my suite they can let go and unwind for the time they are with me and can leave looking even more beautiful and feeling refreshed!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Darsheena also know as Lavish Tresses By Darsheena a pixie and short hair specialist. I am the owner of Pixie Prodigy-( an educational platform for new and experienced licensed Cosmetologist who would like to advance their haircutting skills and break into the pixie world. We can help you become a prodigy of the pixie cut!) located in Smyrna, Tn. My Beginning is a little different than most in my industry. I was in my early 20s In between jobs and just trying to figure out life with my adorable 2 yr old son. One night I woke up to a very strong and loud voice of God saying “ GO TO COSMETOLOGY SCHOOL” I had no prior knowledge of hair at all and it never crossed my mind to ever take up doing hair, But 2 days later (because I had to pray and talk to my mom for confirmation LOL) I enrolled in school. I finished the 1500 hr course on time in 9 months very proud! Here I am almost 15 years later offering a wide range of services from Color, quick weaves, relaxers, transformation styles for women experiencing severe alopecia, and of course Pixie Cuts my Fav!
It gives me so much joy when I turn my clients around in the mirror, I can feel their confidence reviving and their spirit renewing. I love that i create that space for my Lavish Ladies and It reassures me that I did the right thing by listening to Gods voice that night!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Everything felt so good! I just finished hair school and all my clients at school said they were following me to the salon I had new business cards and flyers made.… a few weeks go by I may have serviced 3-5 clients in that time span. At this point I said to myself “girl you have to get a job”. I worked that job for almost 2 years out of school while servicing on Average 3 clients every other week. One day I heard the voice again saying “QUIT THE JOB” I didn’t listen though. Another week went by and this time my pastor said Darsheena its time to quit that job! That next day I had new clients that were referred to me by others and some that found my cards and flyers on their cars or in stores all wanting appointments for the coming week. I never went back to that job! I learned that I had to create the right mindset and realize that it wasn’t going to be easy to build this business and gain trust from clients to provide them with their needs.and keep them coming back. I have to have faith and stay strong through any obstacles that may come along the way. Anyone out there looking to star a new career or enhance your business I want to let you know that you got this, stay strong, have faith, and be confident!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Word of Mouth has been the best business builder for me. When new clients come in they always mention who referred them and how highly they spoke of the shampoo experience or how much they loved their hair style or color and how pleased they are of the knowledge I have for hair care.
