We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Darryl Vickers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Darryl, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission moving forward within the creative film and literary industries is to write and produce and share great stories that enhance the Black, Hispanic, Asian and Native American communities, their stories, their cultural nuances, their viewpoints, and their history, so viewers and readers gain a better and more accurate understanding about the different minorities who have lived and continue to help shape America.
Darryl, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After graduating from Platt College in San Diego, I was the acting secretary for the media company Mental Scope Productions, before spinning off to my current company, LV55 Media LLC. I’ve worked on numerous projects since leaving Platt including producing for music videos, shorts and feature movies, documentaries, various graphic design projects for actors and other filmmakers projects. I’ve also worked on several commercials and written for both feature and short films. Currently I’m developing an episodic podcast project to help promote my latest fiction book novel, Private Investigations: Book One and Book Two.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
1) Writing!… The fact that I can create many different types of characters of different ages, genders and ethnicities, mix them up in different scenarios and have them run loose in my imaginative world. There’s something about bringing that imaginative world to fruition and see it come to life through the actors we cast. That in turn, spurs ideas on how to create my characters within a book novel. I’m a huge fan of watching people’s movements, while listening to their conversations in natural settings, then incorporating my observations while writing action and dialog scenes in a script, and or a scene in a book novel.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Originally in 2014, the idea was to create the project Private Investigations as a short film, then it was changed to a feature movie. It was finally decided to turn it into a web series, since that particular format was extremely popular from 2015 through 2018/19. Eventually, while filming the web series with its large cast and crew, numerous script and personal changes, filming interruptions due to various reasons, it was finally decided (late 2018) to temporarily suspend all filming operations. While the filming project was on hiatus, an actor friend suggested the idea of writing a book novel version of Private Investigations. So after doing research on how to change the formatting from a script to a book novel format, I was able to write the novel version of Private Investigations and expand the storyline into a second novel. In doing so, the book novel has breathed new life into the Private Investigations brand and universe, which allowed the book novel to spin off new ideas such as a future podcast, product merchandise and future plans to revisit filming the episodic series. Just goes to show, by being flexible, patient and willing to listen to others, there are other ways of one achieving their goal.
