We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darron Singleton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darron below.
Hi Darron , thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Hi! So I feel like my life has been all about taking risks/chances on myself while having a strong support system around me! It all started when I auditioned to be a part of the formerly world-renowned Boys Choir of Harlem in 3rd grade instead of only playing sports. I ended up making it in and making their performing tour choir from the end of 5th grade-12th grade. To give a couple of examples, I was able to sing for dignitaries like Nelson Mandela and President Clinton at the White House. The second example would be myself and my brother/business partner Trammell taking the risk of opening our children’s dance studio on the Upper East Side in 2014. We are now preparing for our 10th year! The last risk was getting back into music over the pandemic (I had a little more time on my hands), where I co-produced an instrumental for Mac Cosmetic’s 2020 Halloween campaign with another brother TaylorMade; from there, I created my first Solo album “It’s My Time,” Headlined S.O.B’s here in NYC, have my own show on 8/3 and I’m almost done with my sophomore album, “the road less traveled”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I’ve been into singing/rapping/making music all of my life. Still, I was a part of the Boys Choir of Harlem, which trained me vocally in many styles of music (classical, spiritual, Broadway, gospel, etc.); this allowed me to perform for presidents, ex. Bill Clinton at the White House, dignitaries (Nelson Mandela), and artists/entertainers (diddy’s 35th bday, James Taylor, Kanye’s debut album “two words”). With my original songs, I try to create a musical experience that is enjoyable, easygoing, and infused with positive energy to allow for an immersive experience that brings feelings of elation and happiness. My overarching ambition is to help others by being a positive influence and motivating my listeners so that they can rise above any situation. I cover a lot of genres with my music, but my goal is to do my part to help people feel again, as I think the soul/emotion in music is not as present as it was growing up. On my upcoming album, “the road less traveled,” I have a Mental health Awareness song called “It’s Ok not to Be Ok,” which I made to help myself and others who struggle with past experiences realize they aren’t alone, it’s a daily struggle, no one is perfect, but we all have something left to offer in life to the world. I have uplifting songs, party songs, songs on anxiety I dealt with in the early part of the pandemic, motivational songs, and the list goes on and on!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A particular goal for me is to help bring more awareness to mental/overall health as I know we all deal with it on some level from time to time. From my Anxiety/panic attacks, to members of my family, to friends I think we still have a ways to go with the mental health acceptance as a society and how big of a part “it” plays in our everyday lives!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative is the message or fulfillment the listener/viewer gets from hearing my music or seeing me perform! Having people reach out to me via text, social media, or in person, saying the music helped them get through a workout, their daily job/career, a family matter, dark place, etc., “there” is no better feeling than that! I love sharing my thoughts, experiences as you never know who may need it and how it could potentially impact someone!
