Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Darris Parker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Darris, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As far as rapping, I spent a lot of time just cyphering back when I was in school. If there were folks rapping, I was always eager to join in. After awhile, it got to the point where I started just writing at every available opportunity. I felt like I always needed to have something new for the listeners and my peers. It keeps you sharp, and that’s beautiful. It also meant I was always listening to new music. I always considered each new song, each new album, a chance to pick up something new. Treating albums as a learning experience did wonders for me as well.
Same goes for production. I just kept absorbing whatever I could, trying to hone my own sound and make something unique. It’s a neverending journey. Even now I’m always trying to develop my repertoire, keep making interesting things.
The most essential tool one can have is a willingness to learn. Even if it doesn’t come together the first few times, never ever give up. Always take it as a lesson, not a loss.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I go by Kisai The Spooniest Bard, I’m a producer, emcee, visual artist and singer, I’m New Orleans born and raised but I currently reside in Georgia. I fell in love with hip-hop when I was 8 years old and have been sharing my love ever since. I describe my sound as “fueled by nostalgia”. I’m very inspired by video games, anime, comics, literature and nerdy ventures and interests. If you grew up on Toonami and adult swim, you probably know exactly what I mean. I wear my love on my sleeve. I’m a proud nerd.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Honestly, the most amazing feeling is just creating. Looking at your finished projects is such a wonderful experience. That moment when you can say “This did not exist until I made it”. That’s powerful. The second most rewarding feeling is when someone messages you saying they love one of your creations. That always touches my heart. The times I’ve been blessed with that feeling are precious to me.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The very first thing is to share things you love! More than monetary support, even just dropping a link or a snippet wherever you’re posting is always a great way to support. Even one share can do so much for visibility, which leads to more support. That’s dope. It makes more sense to share things you love than things you dislike or can’t stand. Why give energy to what you don’t like?
