We were lucky to catch up with Darrious Varner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darrious , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
For me every project is meaningful in its own unique way. Each one feels special, but the most meaningful full had been a play I wrote called “My Infinite Sadness”. Its is a semi-autobigraphical story about my mental health journey told in an abstract way. It premiered on my birthday, January 12th, 2019 and nearly sold out every night. It was truly a beautiful experience to produce, direct, and share that show with the world. We had a talk back after every show and it would be the most heartwarming and eye opening experience for the audience and myself.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started taking Being an entertainer seriously around high school. I started acting to hide from the problems i was having in my personal life. It made me feel alive to be someone else for a while and to take people out of their problems as well. It was healing and cathartic. Now, as a musician, I use my personal stories to heal others, the same way theatre and music have healed me. In my 30 years of life I have discovered that art will always be my saving grace. Without performing and creating, I would be so lost and confused. And it is through that art that I help others who are lost. My mission is to heal the world, one song and dance at a time.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding experience of any piece I have created is hearing someone else’s interpretation. I create art that has a deep meaning and the words mean a lot to me personally, but it means so much to me to hear what others hear when I sing or see when a play of mine is read or performed.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think the hardest thing for non creatives to understand is the fearlessness it takes to keep knocking when you’ve had the door slammed in your face so many times. Especially as you get older, they expect you to give up once you hit a certain age and that will never happen.
