We were lucky to catch up with Darren Durlach recently and have shared our conversation below.
Darren, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
My video production company Early Light Media specializes in nonfiction storytelling. We do documentary films, nonfiction tv programming and some corporate work. The biggest topic on everyone’s mind in the film industry at the moment is artificial intelligence. It’s both a major concern, but also an opportunity; especially for nonfiction. Our tagline is “Capture the Human Experience” and I think that there will be a growing appetite for content that is real and human-driven as the use of Ai proliferates. However, I also think there are tools that can automate cold, repetitive tasks that can actually support our creativity, like transcriptions, or rough stringouts of an edit, pitching networks and creating pitch materials easier.

Darren, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My partners and I started Early Light Media having come from the hardscrabble and super-efficient world of TV & newspaper journalism. We were taught to find stories & issues centered around people to help drive the emotional elements and make the story more memorable. We also were required to tell complex stories on tight deadlines. Then we decided to start a video production company together and realized quickly how well our skills transferred over into the corporate world. We start producing corporate, TV, and editorial content. Now our team has grown and we provide all manor of video production services from planning, production, post production to finishing services. We produce a few TV shows for multiple networks and we continue to look for more ways to service the video storytelling needs of our clients and create compelling TV and film.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
We got into journalism in the first place to make a difference by shining a light on the stories that the public needs to know about. Therefore, what drives us today is a desire to continue using our skills of influence and inspiration to help nonprofits, companies that are doing positive things, and making TV that is aspirational and inspiring.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There’s a lot that’s rewarding but when I get most exciting, it’s when I get to collaborate with other artists who have incredible skills. Filmmaking and video production is a team sport and it always inspires me and excites me to see what our team can do on each project.
