We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darren Daneliuk. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darren below.
Hi Darren, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The Cage in Your Head is about the cages that we put ourselves in through our limitation that we put on ourselves. This could be not pursuing your dreams from lack of confidence or belief on ones self. It could be an addiction that we spend our whole lives suffering from rather than dealing with it, moving on and growing as a person. We all put limitations on ourselves through our beliefs and short comings. The Cage in Your Head project is to help people recognize that with whatever they’re going through. They are not alone.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
The Cage in your Head is an extreme dark metal project born in the pandemic as a means to deal with this world. From the cold dark winters of Winnipeg Canada founder Darren Daneliuk and co-conspirator producer and artist David Asher from the US unleashed “A Light to Summon the Dark” in March of 2021. The conspiracy lives on with their collaboration efforts with the follow up “Brother of Damien” released in December of 2021 is just as vicious. The upcoming third album “Me, Myself & Hyde is a concept album about duelling personalities. Scheduled for release later this year and promising to be The Cage in Your Heads most dynamic release yet.
Forged by bands like: Strapping Young Lad, The Haunted, Zimmers Hole, White Zombie, Metallica and Alice Cooper all mixed together. The sound of The Cage in your Head is it’s own entity, it’s own beast.
Rage against the system, government and organized religion the songs also deal with abuse, suicidal ideation, depression, and vengeance.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
Expressing how I feel is paramount to my mental health. Ive always been an artist. As a kid I drew my pictures using my imagination. I never knew what I was going to create until I was done. Music is very similar. I create because I have to. For my soul, my well being. I share my pain, my experiences of abuse, loneliness and depression. Because When I discovered the band ‘Strapping Young Lad’ I immediately experienced relief from my pain. The rage expressed in that project has influenced my music and now provides me with a sense if relief from the pain Ive been dealing with my whole life. Which stems from the abuse I suffered at the hands of my kindergarten teacher and bullies.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I realized that you don’t need to be a guitar virtuoso to write and compose good songs. For many years I was told I wasn’t good enough, I didn’t feel worthy. I was suicidal my whole life. Still am.
You do not need to be an expert in your chosen field to enjoy it, learn and grow with it. We all start at zero. Its how we go from there that counts.
