Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DARRELL NOE. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi DARRELL, thanks for joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
The ability to express their brand and/or messaging in an exciting way. Corporate branding and advertising does not have to be stodgy and boring. Experimenting with different creative expressions and messaging, especially in measurable digital advertising campaigns, can unlock a new audience while exciting the current audience. I remember working for a corporation a few years before I started Seventy Seven Collective, and I was constantly met with the answer, “We always do it this way, and it works well, so why change?”. Our team would appeal, trying to get them to see that just because it “works” doesn’t mean it can’t be “better”. Now we’re able to help our clients through complex marketing challenges by testing various creative and messaging expressions, and we can really fine-tune what works. It’s an exciting time with all the tools at our disposal to show true results.
DARRELL, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been in the creative and marketing industry for almost 25 years, from small to medium sizes agencies to large corporate in-house agencies. I feel fortunate to have landed at multiple agencies that encouraged learning, experimenting, and listening to the problems we’re trying to solve through design, messaging, and media. It was easy to create and express our vision because we had support at every step.
As I became more seasoned in my career, I was pulled farther away from the work but more importantly, the client relationship. I enjoyed the direct connection and collaboration with the clients we are helping. That helps set the stage for why I finally left to start Seventy Seven Collective. Now, we make sure that with every new client, they know we are personally invested because we have a team that listens and cares for their success. It has been an amazing journey to watch our clients succeed because of our approach and direct collaboration with their team and ultimately teaming up for its success.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
My network has been invaluable and I know a lot of entrepreneurs say this, and it’s nothing new or unique. My ad agency days allowed me to collaborate with truly wonderful people. Those people have come back into our lives and provided new work, new clients, and a familiarity of working together that words can not describe how fantastic an experience it all has been.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In my opinion, creative isn’t always king. Man, I can’t believe I just said that. Creative and having a visually exciting design / ad / website / etc is very important, but it’s how the creative intertwines with messaging where the true power of marketing is unlocked.
