We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Darrell Kemp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Darrell, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to be in the entertainment business when I was 12 years old. I would constantly watch every Disney & Nickelodeon show there was. The way those shows would bring family and friends together was pure magic. It would feel as entertainment like that could take anyone from any situation there was into this place where everyone wouldn’t have to stress on where the next meal would come from or when the next bill would be paid. I saw the look on my mom’s face when I would imitate some of her favorite movies or shows, and I knew this is where the real game changer was for me. I knew this industry was something that would help make me help others in more ways than I could count.
Darrell, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My first exposure to the industry was when I auditioned for America’s Got Talent back in 2017 in Savannah Georgia. I believe what sets me apart from everyone else is the depths I would go just to get one opportunity to change the course of my life forever. Because without doubt the one thing I would say I’m proud of myself is that it doesn’t matter how many rejections I’ve received. I didn’t let that stop me from making my dreams flourish to the highest ceiling. Anyone who chose to follow me should know that everything you’ve seen me in or will see me in wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t told no so if you been told no just remember it’s an opinion and opinions can always change.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
Yes! My mission is literally the main fuel source that’s got me getting up every single day. The restless nights and days I would just feel distant from everyone. I know where I want to be and getting there is fueling me to the point that I won’t stop til there’s no air left in my body. My soul won’t rest, my mind won’t stop thinking, my body won’t stop moving, and my grind will continue to be endless. Hell! My Instagram handle is called “Young1_on_amission” for a reason and I won’t change it til I’ve felt like I accomplished my mission.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The auditions I used to attend from my earlier years in Atlanta were tough. Transportation was a whole other beast of its own but I didn’t let that stop me from achieving what god bestowed on me. Yeah I slept in my car with weeks full of clothes hoping to land any role I could get back then. Using the money I would receive to buy food to make it another day. If anything from all that screams that I was consistent and relentless on making this my life.
