We were lucky to catch up with Darrell Hughes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darrell, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Out of the many lessons my parents taught me, teaching me how to pray and have faith is the most important. Discipline, persistence and focus also played an important role on who I am today. Never quit was a lesson that was stressed in our household. My mother often stated that “ if you quit, it becomes easier and easier to quit so quitting was never an option for me! Faith in God has led me to where I now stand today!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve always wanted to be an actor. My friend and I use to make movies back in the early 80’s about marvel characters after church. Coming from a small town, Madison, North Carolina and acquiring superior knowledge about farming (tobacco) I knew that there had to be something else for me. I had this huge dream and I knew that I had to move away in order to fully chase this dream. I joined the US NAVY in 1989 that led me to San Diego California, where upon arriving I was in a total culture shock. While serving I had a daughter and wanted to be an active dad in her life. So after being honorably discharged, I went to Southwestern college to hone my craft. I also played basketball for the college and made some lifelong friends along the way! I was a rapper and continued to write songs while in college which landed me my first meeting with a label. That journey led me to my first movie as Patrick in the hit movie “Two Can Play That Game” the rest is history.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During my time in Hollywood, I had the opportunity to do a record with Enrique Iglesias. The song was titled “Not in Love” and was set to be Enrique’s first single off of his album entitled “Seven” After completing the song and having. It tested in his market, it came back positive for the label. With this news the label had prepared the storyboard for the video! Enrique’s manager at the time was Gerardo Mejia aka Rico Suave, was excited about this record and told me that this record would change my life. Then the CEO of the label felt that his number 1 Latin Artist should not be doing a record with an unsigned artist. This angered everyone involved. He then replaced me with Kelis, and the record didn’t do as well. This led to them moving on from Interscope and signing with Warner Bros and my music career was once again at a halt.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My overall mission is to become an EGOT winner! By any means necessary.
