We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DARREL McPherson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DARREL below.
DARREL, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
Our schools need more art to foster the creative aspect of education. I have found my clients in art include scientist, doctors and lawyers all who use problem solving skills on a daily basis. Art reaches out to people in more ways than simple decoration it expresses the values we hold and reflects the wonders of civilization.

DARREL, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Art has always been part of my life and while I have done many different things to make a living, I was drawn to the healing power of art like music that can sooth or agitate our feelings depending on the message the artist wants to send. I choose to ignore for the most part the pain of living a machine life and instead focus on the wonders around us. These concepts were created in the use of oil paint in canvas. The process of painting was learned from an early age that only grew through time and for me the process never ended, something I found amazing my art still evolves.
The sense of wonder and mystery originally drew me into surrealist paintings and abstract works, but I found that the Impressionist were able to capture a place and time in their works that I found as amazing as the most surreal art. I decided to limit my focus to looking closer at nature and our place in time. While I never completely freed myself from the original mystery, we exist within since art is created in the mind and perceived by the same t he thought expressed by the artist can be shared as if the work viewed has a voice.
Over time the works produced often were for clients who had ideas they wanted to express in their home and with color and form I would work with idea and bring it to reality. Foe me it is an exciting moment to produce art that would not otherwise have been created if it wasn’t for my new friends. Many of the larger works reside in residences in San Diego and have brought happiness to others in bringing light into their homes. While we never know when we will come across the work that is perfect for a place in a home or office, it is also a possibility that it can be brought into reality by painting the idea.
Question not found
There is an overused expression in “I let my art speak for itself” but there is a truth to it. When a body of work is presented, there is a collective power that increases the impression upon the viewer that they are in the midst of something important if not a feeling of the sublime. I have found in viewing art it cannot be seen by glances but only when a person takes a least a minute to take it in. As in music the more you listen/look the more you are feeding a part of your mind. An area inside your mind actually grows to accommodate this awareness. In time you actually feel pleasure from viewing or listening for that wonderful passage. Those who do not take the time to look miss so much in life.
Some have told me they can’t wait till they retire to paint, please don’t wait. Art like music takes a little time to develop the mind hand coordination, it takes time for your mind to grow these ideas. I think if someone has time to watch tv/computer they also have time to sketch or doodle. Just a doodle on piece of paper unleashes ideas that become a thumbnail sketch for a wonderful work of art.
Art is problem solving, art is youthful and ever evolving, art is the lifeblood of civilization. We don’t need art to survive but we need it to be human. Take the time to walk and enjoy our place in time there is still beauty all around us.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have found an artist has to produce in order to improve. Producing art does not always improve income instead it can be a drain on resources. The persistence of the artist to produce regardless of those that would discourage pursuit of art can be overcome by the knowledge of the past artists and their suffering. This is clearly the problems of Monet in trying to provide for his family as noted in his communications to other artist and collectors. I remember seeing a line of Monet paintings two feet deep runing the length of his gallery. None of the paintings were in frames. This artist had works that sat there while he progressed onto his next painting. His perseverance is a shining example of how the artist works. Paint on, never stop, know that your work is worth far more than what you ask and that the buyer is blessed everyday in the viewing of the work. It all comes back in having these new people as friends.
