Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Darline Wilkenson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Darline, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The urgent needs of South American refugees arriving in the US in 2008 served as the inspiration for Give to Haiti (G2H). I witnessed firsthand the struggles and hardships faced by Haitian families who had been displaced and were seeking refuge in Brazil. These families were living in dire conditions, which propelled them to undertake perilous journeys across the Darien Gap to Mexico and then cross the border into the United States.
There was a significant gap in the support system for Haitian refugees. Many organizations were providing aid, but few were addressing the specific cultural, social, and logistical challenges unique to the Haitian community. G2H was created to fill this gap by offering not just temporary relief but sustainable, culturally sensitive support. We provide essential supplies, legal assistance, ESL classes, immigration support, and programs fostering community integration and self-sufficiency. The gratitude and hope of those we helped affirmed that we were making a meaningful difference.
Give to Haiti is about addressing overlooked problems with a unique approach and empowering Haitian refugees to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. This journey, though challenging, has been incredibly rewarding.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Darline Wilkenson. Most people call me Dr. Dee. I hold a doctorate in business administration with a concentration in leadership and accounting. With over 25 years of experience in accounting, I have a deep understanding of financial management and organizational leadership.
I am passionate about research and aim to teach at colleges and universities, contributing further to the academic field. The Georgia Haitian Chamber of Commerce recently nominated me for the Bridge Award in recognition of our significant contributions to the community through Give to Haiti. Under my leadership, Give to Haiti has not only supported countless families in their migration journeys but also played a crucial role in organizing community events, including the memorial service for a community member who passed away just three days after starting a new job, leaving his family in despair.
Each team member brings unique skills and a deep commitment to serving the Haitian community.
I am introducing to you the Henry family. Like many Haitian families, the Henrys faced impossible challenges in their homeland. Seeking a better life, they moved to Brazil. However, the conditions there were far from ideal, leaving them desperate and vulnerable. This is where G2H stepped in.
From the moment we learned about the Henrys, we committed to supporting them every step of the way. Our journey together began in Brazil, where we provided immediate aid, including food, and necessities. But we knew this was just the beginning. The family’s dream was to reach the United States, a place they believed would offer them safety and opportunities.
The Henrys faced a daunting journey ahead – crossing the infamous Darien Gap, a perilous stretch of jungle between South America and Central America. G2H provided not just logistical support, but emotional backing as well. We ensured they had the necessary resources to survive the crossing, including navigation tools and emergency contacts.
After enduring this incredible journey through the Darien Gap, the Henrys reached Mexico. There again, G2H’s support continued. We connected them with local partners to provide temporary shelter, legal assistance, and preparation for the next phase of their journey. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure their paperwork was in order and that they understood their rights and options.
Finally, the day came for the Henrys to cross the border into the United States. This step was filled with anxiety and uncertainty, but we stood by them. Our dedicated team coordinated with U.S. immigration services, ensuring the Henrys were treated with dignity and respect. We arranged for their immediate needs upon arrival – from housing to education and employment opportunities.
Today, the Henry family is thriving. The children are enrolled in school, the parents are working stable jobs, and they have integrated into their community, contributing positively and living the life they dreamed of.
The story of the Henry family is just one example of how G2H makes a difference. We take a unique approach, assisting families from the moment they reach out for help until they are fully resettled and self-sufficient. Our work doesn’t stop at borders; it’s an ongoing commitment to ensuring every individual and family we help can achieve their potential and live with dignity.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honesty, consistency, and reliability are the key factors that have helped us build our reputation and maintain strong relationships with our clients. Word-of-mouth often works faster than any paid advertisement. Building and nurturing strong relationships within the community has been crucial. Organizing and participating in community events has expanded our network and reinforced our reputation. In our industry, collaboration is essential; we partner with other nonprofit organizations to enhance our impact, share resources, and support each other’s missions. This collaborative approach not only strengthens our community ties but also ensures that we can provide comprehensive and effective services to those we serve.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Funding my business began with a personal commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. The initial funds needed to start the organization came from a tax refund. I saw this refund not just as a financial windfall but as an opportunity to create something meaningful.
With this money, I was able to lay the foundation for the organization, covering essential start-up costs such as legal fees, initial supplies, and marketing materials. I made the choice to use my tax refund out of a strong desire to help those who were less fortunate than me. I wanted to ensure that the resources I had could be channeled into making a tangible impact.
Starting small, the organization began by addressing immediate needs within the community, such as providing food, clothing, and support services to families in need. By carefully managing the initial funds and reinvesting any returns back into the organization, we were able to grow gradually and expand our reach.
This humble beginning, fueled by a tax refund, set the tone for our values of resourcefulness, dedication, and a commitment to helping others. It taught me the importance of leveraging every available resource to create a lasting impact and underscored the power of starting with what you have to achieve greater things.
