We recently connected with Darius Wright and have shared our conversation below.
Darius, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
From as far as I can remember, since I was a kid. Growing up in church being in the children choir and directing the children’s choir I knew then I was very artistic. Then as I got older and in school my love for music, instruments and dancing became stronger. Where I joined the band playing the clarinet and alto saxophone since middle school, and in high school I joined the choir. So I was keeping myself surrounded by music and entertainment. Going to concerts and seeing music video’s on tv was something I was drawn to and knew I wanted to pursue that kind of career.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I now am a freelance creative director/choreographer with over 10 years of experience in the industry. I have always been passionate about music, dancing, art and design, and I knew from a young age that I wanted to pursue a career in the creative field. After studying graphic design in college my first year, I began working on myself in my craft by taking dance classes even classes that I knew I didn’t want to take but it will keep me well rounded with where I wanted to go in that career field.
After a few years with an agency. Eventually, I decided to branch out and start my own entertainment business as a freelance
Creative Director/Choreographer called D Wright Entertainment. I work with a diverse range of clients, from small c list artist to A list artist. I have collaborated with different companies and people, helping them to develop their visual identity and create impactful work that resonate with their target audience.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I’ve always been compelled to be creative, it’s very fulfilling and rewarding. In grade school, high school and college, I was the kid that always to myself but also had crazy ideas with projects and everything that worked on. Ultimately, I was a person with a need to perform and to create. I always felt different, but never knew why. I’ve since realized, I feel and express thing differently because I’m an artist. I have many layers of creativity, never just limiting myself to one creative interest. I’m an artist, vocalist, musician, choreographer and creative director. And something now that has recently been up my sleeve to is producing shows.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Yes, most definitely! A lot of people don’t realize that your creativity can hit you at any moment. You can look or hear something and be inspired by it and then BOOM!! The process starts of being creative. It’s not just when you’re in the studio working on choreo or on stage. You can be driving on the street, walking through a mall, or in the middle of a meeting. It’s whenever the universe decides to sprinkle that creative dust of energy on you at any given moment. To be a creative to me it’s something special, which brings joy to the people who see and hear your work.
