We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darius Gaynor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darius below.
Darius, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
During the pandemic, I wanted to help others make more active income and to think about the possibility of starting their own agency business. I bought the domain DollarPassion.com right before the pandemic began in the United States.
I launched DollarPassion as an agency training and consulting business alongside my latest agency called SumoGrowth. The idea was SumoGrowth is done for you services for Agency, SAAS, and Consultants while DollarPassion is the education and coaching.
I knew it would work at a time of many layoffs due to lockdowns because people were searching online for ways to make more money. Agency-style businesses are what allowed me to become self-employed over 10 years ago. Having your own clients can replace any 9-5 jobs that you hate or lost.
The term drop servicing is unique and it just means fully outsourcing all digital services so you can focus on sales and marketing instead of fulfillment. Similiar to dropshipping but instead of products it is services.
What excites me the most is seeing new students land their first clients and actually take the leap of quitting their jobs. DollarPassion is now my passion project while SumoGrowth is my own agency business.
Darius, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Darius Gaynor. I am a former marketing analyst for a casino resort. I am self-taught in digital marketing, website development, and sales. I learned from books, blogs, and videos. Sales I learned from just connecting with people and advising them on what direction to take.
Once I got enough clients to replace my job’s income I took the leap to focus on my crowdfunding marketing agency at the time called KickRank. It helped Kickstarter campaign owners raise funds for their projects.
I sold KickRank for over six figures for my first-ever business exit. Since then I have consulted other agencies and helped them with growth marketing. I also advised software startups as well.
I am most proud of being outside my comfort zone and helping others find the same kind of success with an agency business that I did.
SumoGrowth has monthly clients and DollarPassion enrolls new students into my Drop Servicing Accelerator program.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
Selling KickRank I learned it is all about monthly recurring revenue. Investors or Entrepreneurs care less about buying a business that only has one-time offers. Make sure your business is recurring, reordering, or subscription-based if you want to one day exit the business. Whether you are reselling digital services or software.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
For new clients, it has been using Linkedin, Facebook, and cold email campaigns. I believe cold calling is still effective but is becoming less effective than it was over 10 years ago. For new students, it has been Reddit, Instagram, and Facebook. Sometimes Youtube and TikTok as well.
