We were lucky to catch up with Darius Davila recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Darius , thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
I started Haunt Me back in 2021 exactly one day before Valentine’s Day. This was peak pandemic period and I was coming off of a bit of a break from playing music or being in a band. The reason for that break being that I had been playing music ever since I was twelve years old and I had been writing music and fronting bands ever since I was fourteen and a freshman in high school. From the time I was fourteen up until I started Haunt Me at age twenty five I knew I wanted music to be my career and I knew I wasn’t meant for a traditional 9-5 job. So for more than half of my life I had been trying to make it in the music industry. I know “Making it” means different things to different people but for me I just wanted to at least be able to write, record, and perform music as a full time job and have it pay my bills and that would be good enough for me while at the same time being able to have my music speak to people and move people on an emotional level. I am very grateful to be where I am today with my music however it took a lot of hard work, time, heartache and grinding to get to this point in my life. As I said previously, before I started Haunt Me I was in many different bands and projects of many different types of styles and genres and I spent over a decade of my life trying to succeed with these different bands I was in. However after years and years of playing small local shows where sometimes no one would show up so you ended up performing in front of only the bar staff and other bands who shared the bill with you, I reached a point where I was just mentally and emotionally exhausted and needed a break from music. It was during this year break that I was able to rediscover my passion and love for writing music. I was also going through a lot of very difficult losses in my life at the same time such as my father (whom I was ver close with) passing away and dealing with the breakup of a very serious relationship I had been in for years. Being forced to be isolated during COVID allowed me to refocus and put all of my emotion and pain into whatever music I was writing. So I guess you can say that Haunt Me was birthed from sadness and pain and a very difficult and dark time for me personally. However I’m glad that some beauty and something good and dear to me came from all of the pain, loss and heartache I experienced.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Darius Davila and I am the singer, lyricist and one of the main musical composers for a band called Haunt Me. I’d say that Haunt Me is a fairly eclectic project that combines the indie/alternative rock genres with Post-Punk and Darkwave. Some of our biggest influences are The Smiths, The Cure, Interpol, The Strokes, New Order, Joy Division, Her’s, Depeche Mode and The Drums. So if you listen or like any or all of those bands, then you just might like Haunt Me.
Our goal as a band is to write and create music that you can sing, dance, and fall in love to. Hell even music you can make love to if you so choose. We just want to make you feel something and want to provide an escape for our listeners and a soundtrack to their lives.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Honestly the best source of new fans and listeners for the band has without question been a combination of social media, streaming services (specifically Spotify and their promotion and curation of playlists) and just touring and playing shows all over the country as much as possible.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me personally the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is when I meet fans and they relay to me how much my music has helped them get through a difficult time in their life or how the music we make inspires them to create or start a band, It’s always crazy and cool when fans get lyrics that you’ve written tattooed on their body or when fans say that they used your song as their main wedding song. I don’t know it’s just super surreal and so rewarding as an artist.
