Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dario Lewczyk. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dario, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
In my opinion, though video and photography may seem like a great place to make money with so many so-called influencers posting their lavish lifestyles and large followings, that people would be jumping head over heels to work with you on your project ideas but the reality is much more complicated. So many people who get into this field end up dropping tens of thousands of dollars on gear and production tools but never really have a game plan or have not mentally prepared themselves for the possibility of failure that oftentimes, these would-be creatives just give up. The fact of the matter is that it takes a mixture of charisma, tenacity, and planning to see any kind of success in this industry.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
If no one has heard of me before, I primarily offer videography and photography services to Suffolk county in New York. I have worked on weddings as well as professional shoots for LinkedIn and even several events for my local church. I think the main draw people have for working with me is that I provide the service they are looking for at a good value. I am also very friendly on set and keep my shoots lighthearted which is something that people feel puts them at ease. My style can generally be thought of as cinematic or dramatic. I am a huge fan of lighting and try to set myself apart by using lighting to my advantage to accentuate the features of my subjects or add interest to an otherwise bland scene. I also love to create depth so I will often use very long lenses and foreground objects to create a real sense of space in my photos as well as videos.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My creative journey really started with an idea to become a YouTuber. I feel like that’s where a lot of creatives start as well. I, like many other people just figured that if I created videos consistently, that people would watch and though that is kind of true, there were a lot of things I missed at first. I think one of the biggest things was scripting my videos and really thinking hard about what I wanted to say. When I first started out, my videos got quite long and took a while to really reach the points I was trying to make because everything was freeform. If I had instead, thought a bit more about the video before hitting record, it would have drastically improved my efficiency at conveying my message as well as retained viewership. I also thought that having the best equipment to make my videos look great was the most important thing. Though good equipment and a strong visual appeal is good, there’s definitely a lot more that goes into a great video and story really is king. Rather than talking about things, showing them is much more effective so take whatever camera or lighting you have and work more on showing rather than telling all the time.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think that being a creative person and having a platform – however small – is a fantastic opportunity to give a voice to those who either don’t have one or have the articulation to tell that story. I have several ideas on my mind of short films I want to create in this coming year but some of the ones that I have done have been some of my most rewarding, not because I got a lot of money for them.. In fact, many I did for absolutely free. But the messages conveyed in those videos, I feel, will be able to touch people’s lives and bring hope to people who may be in a dark place or give them the courage to step out in faith. As I had mentioned in a previous question, I do a lot of work with my local church and that has been some of the most rewarding work because I have been able to bring awareness to their organization and get more people interested in attending which has led to quite a few life transformations. The only way I have been able to do free work so often is by also working as a Ph.D. student in chemistry, so that is how I’m able to keep my business afloat.
