Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dario Black. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Dario thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path professionally was when I began writing love poems. I’ve always been captivated by the concept of love—how this one word can carry so much weight, evoke deep emotions, and be experienced in countless ways beyond just romantic relationships. My journey began with poetry, where I explored these different dimensions of love. Over time, those poems evolved into songs, and I found myself experimenting with melodies, slowly building the confidence to sing them out loud.
Growing up, I wasn’t always the most confident kid, but music became a source of strength for me. It provided me with an incredible energy that helped me grow more assured in who I was. The turning point came when I came out as gay to my parents. It wasn’t easy—being the first in my Latino family to come out was a tough experience. But music gave me a voice, a way to express my true self, and it was during this time that I knew I was an artist. I realized that through music, I could not only tell my story but also connect with others on a deeper level, sharing the strength I found in my own journey.
Dario , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an independent music artist with roots in Venezuela, raised by Colombian parents. My journey into music began as a way to navigate life’s hardships, and over time, it transformed into my greatest passion and joy. Music became my voice, helping me to express emotions and experiences that words alone couldn’t capture.
As an independent artist, I’ve faced challenges, particularly when it comes to resources for promoting my music. The industry can be tough, especially for someone like me—a gay Latino artist who sings in Spanish. Breaking through in this space isn’t always easy, as the intersection of my identity isn’t widely represented or accepted in the mainstream music scene.
What sets me apart is my music’s focus on themes that resonate deeply with self-empowerment, self-love, and intimacy, rather than the more common themes of sex or drugs. My songs are about celebrating who you are, embracing your uniqueness, and finding strength within yourself. I believe music has the power to uplift and inspire, and that’s what I strive to do with every track I create.
One of my proudest moments so far has been my recent performance in Europe. It was my first show on the continent, and the overwhelming support and success of that event reaffirmed my commitment to my craft. For anyone following my journey or discovering my music for the first time, I want them to know that my work is about more than just entertainment—it’s about creating a space where people can connect, heal, and feel empowered through the universal language of music.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a pivotal moment in my journey as a music artist when I decided to make a significant change. After spending a long time pursuing music in Los Angeles, I realized that while I had some great opportunities there, I felt the need to explore new horizons where I could expand my music even further. That’s when I made the bold decision to move to Europe, specifically Berlin.
The move to Berlin has opened up new doors for me in ways I hadn’t imagined. The city’s vibrant creative scene has allowed me to collaborate with other producers and creators who bring fresh perspectives and energy to my work. It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience, and my journey here has been nothing short of amazing.
As part of this new chapter, I’m even learning German, which is an exciting challenge. Who knows—maybe in the future, I’ll be able to incorporate German into my music, alongside Spanish and English. This pivot to Europe wasn’t just about changing locations; it was about embracing growth and the possibilities that come with stepping outside of my comfort zone.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
To best support artists and foster a thriving creative ecosystem, I believe it starts within our immediate circles. Surrounding ourselves with people who genuinely believe in us, who empower and support our creative endeavors, is crucial. Too often, people are eager to pay for a ticket to see big-name artists like Maluma or Beyoncé but hesitate to support their own friends or local artists who are working hard to make their mark.
One of the most impactful ways society can support creatives is by actively engaging with and sharing their work. This means not only attending their shows or buying their art but also spreading the word—sharing their songs, posting about their projects, and introducing their work to others. It’s these small acts of support that can make a significant difference, helping artists reach new audiences and build sustainable careers.
Creating a culture where we uplift and promote the talents within our own communities is key. When we invest in the people around us, we contribute to a more vibrant and diverse creative ecosystem where all artists have the opportunity to thrive.
