We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darianne Tolbert. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darianne below.
Alright, Darianne thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Unlike many creatives, I stumbled into a passion byway of curiosity. Two weeks before college, I was asked “what do you want to pursue in a career?” I replied, “I want to tell people’s stories”. At the time that answer seemed so simple and vague, but I did not know it would take me on a wild ride that started with a degree in Political Communications, and has led to the establishing of a content studio and hub for collaborative, creative storytelling in the deep south. Yeah, ‘wow’ is the word that comes to my mind as well!
The core of this business started with a passion for capturing nonprofit service events, church services, and any other mission-based stories both visually and in written form. I always found myself being the person — at the right place with my camera and pen — ready to capture something meaningful. In my service to others, the seed was planted in me to do something bigger than I had ever dared to do which was to create independent films and give underrepresented creatives opportunity in doing so.
I took a risk with very little experience to produce a short film by a young emerging writer. Then I did it again, but with other emerging, yet overlooked creatives. Before I knew it, it became a thing! Now, I continue to offer scriptwriting and content production services for clients. But my primary focus is to continue fostering community and establish a creative hub for emerging creatives in the Central Alabama region.

Darianne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Since 2014, I’ve worked extensively in the field of public affairs and public engagement with a degree in Political Communication. My work has encompassed everything from media relations, visual content creation, and marketing at various levels. Over my short career, I have worked in the field of communications at the university level, the nonprofit sector, as a freelancer and most recently within the Department of Defense as a military communicator.
I got into this industry by happenstance — I was primarily a writer. and I often needed a great photographer to supplement local media publication pieces. When I could not find a good photographer, then I became one.
One thing led to another, and I was equally as good at photography as I was at writing. Then photography turned into videography. Soon I was being hired independently to put those skills to use in a more cohesive fashion — taking clients from development all the way to content production with one goal in mind: telling an impactful story.
The number one problem I solve is elevating brands through quality visuals and impactful storytelling. Storytellers rule the world — and teaching clients the power of a well-communicated story and quality production is what I do.
I am now on a mission to pour these skills into others at 2D FilmWorks while building community, and uplifting the voices of underrepresented storytellers and creatives.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The one mission driving my creative journey is to build a haven of resources, collaboration, and development for the creative “misfits”. Many creatives, myself included, have felt like going to a large city like Los Angeles or New York City was the only way to “make it” in a creative career or the only place to meet other creatives.
I have found that to be a myth. However, the truth remains that it is very difficult to “make it” in many places that lack the support that many creatives need for growth and career development. My mission is to be a catalyst and small ripple in the pond to change that in my local area.
My mission is to serve the creative “misfits” that have no where else to go, but may not quite fit where they currently are. There’s a place for them at 2D FilmWorks.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One book that has significantly impacted by entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy is called “The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level” by Gay Hendricks.
Like many creatives who have a tendency to be multi-skilled, I spent a lot of time doing things that I was “good” at but not “genius” at. Hendricks masterfully outlines the barriers that keep creatives and other highly achieving individuals from operating in their “zone of genius”, living a life full of love and abundance, and expressing the magnitude of their creative potential.
This is the ultimate book to shift the mindset of every entrepreneur and creative from limitation to limitless possibility.
