We recently connected with Darian Poe and have shared our conversation below.
Darian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was raised playing music with my dad and brother from about the time I could hold a pair of drumsticks, sing, and play guitar. As I grew up I started playing saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, drums, and guitar. As a kid in middle school I wanted to become a band director for a school/college. But it wasn’t until my Sophomore year of High School that I started to play live music and decided that’s what I wanted to actually pursue in life. One night I went to an open mic night in St. Louis, Missouri and I got on stage with a couple people and did my first live performance. After that I feel like my outlook changed and I was on the chase to play live music as much as I could.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into performing live music from one late night at an open mic night, I got up on stage with some people and performed a couple songs and then I felt like that’s what I wanted to do the rest of my life, perform for people. I am a solo artist from Bethalto, Illinois. It’s a little town outside of St. Louis, Missouri. I write my own music and I also play various cover songs. I think what sets me apart from a lot of people is the type of music that I write and that I am solely doing it on my own. I am most proud of my first music video that came out this past December. The song is called “If You Could See It Now”. It’s a song I wrote about my grandfather that passed away years ago and just wish he was here to see all that I’ve been doing. The main thing that I want followers to know about me is that I am a genuine musician. I want to perform my music to help people get through the times their going through and to hopefully inspire younger generations to want to play music like the people before me have.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve been building my audience on social media by posting videos of myself performing my originals and cover songs. I feel like the best way to get people to follow is to show them what you’re about and what you do.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think that society needs to keep an open mind on upcoming artists and try to give them a shot at what they are trying to create. I think people are starting to become some-what close minded on certain art styles. Also just keeping the venues and establishments lively and open to various different types of artists.
