We were lucky to catch up with Daria Sarmientos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Daria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I attended my first acting class quite by accident. After graduating in Political Science I had found a stable 9-5 job, but I felt a constant feeling of apathy. It was as if I had within me the desire to express my soul, but I had no idea how to do it. Movies have always been my passion, so one day I decided to challenge myself and entered the acting academy “Accademia Artisti” in Milan and auditioned for the acting class for movies and TV series. And wow… it was love at first sight. I felt that I had finally found the outlet for the universe of emotions that I felt inside me and I finally felt that I had found my place. Bringing stories and characters to life is something that comes naturally to me. I understood that this was my path and I have never felt so happy!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an Italian actress and I live in Los Angeles. Since I started this career I have been lucky enough to be able to act in numerous short films, many of which have won awards at various film festivals and achieved great success. In 2022 I played one of the lead roles in a feature film “Circle Bridge” which is currently in post production.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Every time I perform a particularly intense scene, after hearing the “cut” and seeing the expressions of the directors and their happiness in realizing that I have performed the scene exactly as they imagined it… this is a source of enormous satisfaction for me. When I get reviews about how the audience felt with me in that moment everything my character was feeling emotionally then I know I did a good job. Being able to arouse emotions in people is what drives me to love my job.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Soooo many, but in particular “The Power of Acting” by Ivana Chubbuck is a book that taught me to analyze a character in depth and through different phases. It teaches me to answer as many questions as possible, like “why does my character do certain actions?” “What do I want to achieve in this scene?” “what do I want to achieve on a total level in this story?” “What are my obstacles? What or who is stopping me from getting it and what tactics can I use to get it?”
