We recently connected with Daria Poirier and have shared our conversation below.
Daria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
When I was a little girl my parents taught me to be close to nature. I spent my summers in our family cottage, far away from the big city. The cottage was near to our local farms where we would get most of our provisions. My parents also had a beautiful garden where we were growing our own food. I planted trees and was taught how to care for them.
I remember my mother teaching me about herbs and their healing powers as we would walk through the blossom fields. I watched her make infusions from them to create hair and skin care products. I had a lot of fun learning these skills from her.
Then my life changed. I was too busy with my school and sports. I was on the National synchronized swimming team and had a successful career. Later I was accepted to the most prestigious Show and company in the world, Cirque du Soleil Show “O”. Performing in this show was a dream come true and the most extraordinary job I ever had. Through my years training in the pool, I’ve witnessed a lot of performers struggling with dry skin, and extremely damaged hair from the chlorine. This motivated me to come back to my childhood memories and led me to start my own small business making handmade soaps and body products, where I could use natural ingredients and create my own skincare with hopes to help my fellow performers and myself. That is how Daria’s Soap was born.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Daria and I am a small business owner. I’m making handcrafted soaps and skin care products in small batches here in Las Vegas, Nevada.
I hand make all of my soaps using a cold process, and I allow them to cure for about to 4 weeks. I strive to make the best soaps possible, using the finest all natural and organic ingredients, essential oils and natural colorants. This also includes my spices, teas, clays, herbs, and dry botanicals.
Using natural herbs in my soaps brings numerous benefits for the skin and adds natural color to all of my products as well. Since herbs contain so many medicinal properties, I, just like my mom, use them to make oil infusions. These herbal oils have very powerful healing and beauty benefits.
People recognize how much love I put in to making my soaps and skincare, and often reach out saying how much they appreciate them. All of my hard work is worth it, when my products are loved and used. To see my customers happy, is the most rewording thing for me.
My shop is located in Las Vegas Nevada and weather here can be very harsh. To help battle this, I’ve created my products to be extra nourishing for the sensitive skin this dry climate can cause. I love working with nature to create products that will make our skin look and feel beautiful. I hope you’ll enjoy using my products as much as I enjoy making them for you.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My Business was a victim of fraud. I was paid for my services with stolen credit cards.
At that time I thought I am providing a service to a paying customer and I did my best to check their identification. However, the thief/client used stolen credit cards to pay for my services, and the products were made and delivered to a specified location by a freight company that worked with him.
My business had suffered tremendous losses, and there is a very long and painful way to recoup from that devastation. These people don’t care about how hard you work or that you are a human with heart and soul. For them I was just another target. It’s unimaginable what me and my family went through. I worked so hard to achieve where I was and couldn’t believe this had happened to me. I wanted to drop everything at once, but after some time I have decided to move on with my business.
Problems are not eternal, they always have a solution. We need to be strong and rise from the falls that life throws at us. After the dark, there will be light.
It was time for me to take the hit but come back stronger and learn from my mistakes. I couldn’t give up. I owe all who love Daria’s Soap and I will keep going despite the obstacles in my way because the reword of doing what I love is so much greater than anything in this life.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I think is Farmers Markets. Because a lot of people are still shopping local and small. They prefer quality over quantity. They get to try my samples and actually smell and touch the soaps. Its perfect for one on one interaction, besides you get to know your customers on a personal level, which is always great.
