We recently connected with Daria Nadar and have shared our conversation below.
Daria, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
When Russia attacked Ukraine in the morning of February 24 th, my heart dropped. I couldn’t believe this is a reality and when situation stated to escalade I realized I can’t just sit straight. Having a business was my outlet to bring awareness, raise money in support and unite. Oh My Cake was donating 25% of profit and to these days since the war is nowhere to be over we still try to continue to support. Our people, we stand together, always. I just couldn’t do nothing and live peaceful here knowing what’s going on back home. My mom called me the other day, crying,” Nadar said. “Begging me to say thank you on behalf of the whole family and behalf of all Ukrainians for support of San Diego people that are showing so much love and solidarity.”
I truly appreciate an incredible amount of support Oh My Cake and Ukraine received. We sent out over $20k in humanitarian aid thanks to people of San Diego.
Daria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
During 6 years that I’ve been in San Diego I had troubles finding desserts/cakes/sweets that are high in quality and don’t give me a diabetes after one bite. The more desserts I tried the more the idea of European style cake shop was cooking up in my head. Oh My Cake was born during first wave of pandemic Covid-19.I always loved to bake but the free time during quarantine gave me a push to upgrade the skills and learn technics. At Oh My Cake we are giving you the highest quality of dessert. It means fresh, organic, balanced in sweetness and natural flavors. We make custom cakes WITHOUT Buttercream, using only Whipped Ganache that is based on chocolate and cream. At the storefront we carry European style mousse cakes, cheesecakes, macarons and some of my favorite things like tres leches, 3 chocolate gooey cookies and etc.
Our Cinnamon Rolls are known as “Best Buns in Town”, we freshly bake them every day and have a special secret recipe for the cinnamon goodness with cream cheese frosting. Come and try for yourself!
Our shop is located in Hillcrest 3650 Fifth ave #104 under the same roof with Pappalecco – an authentic Italian café in San Diego.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Instagram was/is only social media platform my business is using at the moment. It helped me to start my business, connect with target audience, make friends in the restaurant industry. San Diego food community has amazing supportive people, they help you promote your business by sharing it on their social media, some big fishes charge for that but it’s usually worth it based on my experience.
I recommend focusing only on one platform on social media and give it all you got. Shifting between platform is going to be hard to give it 100% to all of them and can create a little bit of a mess, which will result in inconsistency and loss of clients interest.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I started by offering ABSOLUTELY different product when it comes to desserts and cakes. European style cakes known as mousse cake (Entremtes) are widely popular in Europe but not here in the US. It was hard to keep pushing and showing people that this types of cakes are actually lighter, more complicated on a flavor profile and extremely decadent. It definitely took a while before people showed any interested. It was VERY slow process that was discouraging, I was thinking more and more on just doing what everyone do – buttercream cakes. But I knew I wanted to be different! I was so passionate about those desserts that I believe now all my clients are obsessed with them. Truly the best decision I’ve made – nothing good comes easy and sometimes you just have to keep pushing even when there’s no results. Results ALWAYS come with consistency, so never give up on your idea.
