We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Darena Mills a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Darena , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
What my parents did right was instilling in me discipline, faith, and a sense of purpose. They led by example — working hard, honoring their commitments, and never making excuses. They taught me to value education, but also to pursue my passions unapologetically.
They encouraged me to dream big, but reminded me that dreams only work if you do. That foundation is why I can face challenges in business with resilience and why I invest in my growth without waiting for someone else to open the door for me.”
And of course, the discipline of prayers.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m MissDMills, founder of Head Of Hair Studio, a beauty brand deeply rooted in my Ghanaian heritage and passion for empowering others through beauty. Being born/ breaded in Takoradi, Ghana, I developed a strong connection to the boldness and confidence of my culture, which inspired me to create a space where clients can feel confident and celebrated in their own skin and hair.
My journey into the beauty industry began alongside my formal education, as I pursued both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. Throughout this time, I remained committed to my passion by becoming a certified lash technician, cosmetologist, and makeup artist, allowing me to offer a well-rounded, professional service to my clients.
Head Of Hair Studio specializes in premium hair products and personalized beauty services designed to meet the unique needs of each client. We focus on quality, authenticity, and creating a trusting relationship with clients to help them feel their best. Whether through expert styling, sourcing top-tier hair extensions, or makeup artistry, we solve the challenge of finding reliable, high-quality beauty solutions that celebrate individuality.
What truly sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to consistency, integrity, and community engagement. We don’t just provide products or services; we build lasting connections and empower clients to express their authentic selves with confidence.
I’m proud that Head Of Hair Studio has grown into a respected and trusted brand, built on resilience, hard work, and a clear vision. My goal is for potential clients and followers to know that when they choose us, they’re choosing quality, passion, and a brand that cares deeply about their beauty journey.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My resilience is rooted in my heritage and my faith. I was born in Takoradi, Ghana, and I carry the boldness of my ancestors and the belief that even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. While earning my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, I never let go of my passion for the beauty industry. I invested in myself — becoming a certified lash tech, cosmetologist, and makeup artist — and built Head Of Hair Studio from the ground up.
Resilience, to me, is showing up on the slow days, the rainy days, and even the no-call, no-show days— still serving clients and building my craft behind the scenes. I compete only with myself, push to be better every day, and lead with the mindset that Jesus Christ is my CEO, and I’m His ambassador on earth.”

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
“When I started Head Of Hair Studio, I didn’t have investors or a large financial cushion — I had determination, discipline, and a clear vision. I funded my business entirely through personal savings from previous jobs and side hustles, making lifestyle sacrifices to invest in quality products, tools, and most importantly, my brand image.
I believe first impressions mean everything. Before someone will sow into your business, they need to see that you look and play the part. That meant creating a professional, polished brand presence from day one — from marketing materials to the client experience.
Even today, I still fund everything myself, including every certification and beauty class I’ve taken to expand my skills as a lash tech, cosmetologist, and makeup artist. For me, funding isn’t just about money — it’s about consistently investing in my growth, my craft, and my brand so that it continues to stand strong and credible.”**
