We were lucky to catch up with Darah Hubbard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Darah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think in ordering to be successful you have to have you own view on what you see as a success. Does it matter how many likes you get on social media? Is that how you can gauge success? Maybe you feel successful if you reach a monetary goal. I’ve often considered factors like these but I feel the most successful when I create something I’m proud of. It’s icing on the cake when I have repeat clients and referrals because to me that shows people are connecting with what I do and finding value in in it.

Darah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
It feels like I’ve always been interested in photography but I think becoming part of a band in 2010 is what really made me start to take a more in depth look at it. We were very DIY mostly because we were broke teenagers but also we liked to be very hands on. I took on the role of creating visuals and I honestly learned so much by creating content for us. I eventually got a job assisting for a sports photography company and later moved into a management position with another company where I would often find myself taking photos for social media etc. I tried to incorporate photography into my life as much as possible so I could continue to learn.
Today, I’m fortunate to be a full time freelance photographer/videographer. I will shoot anything you can dream up. I’m genuinely just that interested in all things photo and video related. I’m extremely grateful that I get to call something i enjoy doing my job. I believe there is an opportunity to learn with every project I work on and I’m so happy that people believe in me to bring their vision to life.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The biggest thing for me was consistency. For a long time I would make sure I was out taking photos at least once a week. Once I sorted through everything I’d plan out my feed and schedule posts to some degree. I used to posed at least 3 times a week. That’s a little hard for me to do these days but when I started I feel like it really helped.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I’ve gotten a lot of work through Instagram. A lot of my clients first saw my work on there and reached out. Other than that it’s been all word of mouth and recommendations from people I’ve worked with in the past.
