We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dara Quick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dara, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
We’re already breaking the standard by having a hybrid Hair Salon and Costume Shop! But, what makes us different is that we cater to all humans, and really try to make the experience comfortable and special. You can come in wearing your normal clothes and get transformed into an otherworldly creature all in one place! We offer services from head to toe as well as costume options and a photo studio to capture the magic and finish things off before hitting the town. Most of all, we make sure our clients feel safe enough to play and try new things. It’s what it’s all about,
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been in the hair industry for 18 years now and it has given me so much. The connection you get with your community, especially in a small city like New Orleans, is extremely special. On my off days I would be creating art, costuming, building art installations, and putting on interactive art shows with some of the best. My Artner in Crime, Chrissy, has been by my side through it all helping me grow the costume aspect of our shop. She’s our head maker and the love she has for creating comes through on every project big and small. What I was really aiming for was to create a space where we could do hair, make art, make money, all while being surrounded by supportive humans in a non toxic environment. Now, we have 13 people who work at the shop, and it’s pretty rewarding to see that many people not only coexist, but thrive in the world we’ve created together.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative, for me, would have to be the joy I see in people when they’re in our handmade creations. Doing hair is something that gives you that immediate satisfaction of helping someone love themselves more. Costuming does that too, especially if you open yourself up to it and take some chances. You may just love this new creature you see in the mirror.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve been building my audience on social media since I started doing hair, but I started to really focus on it once I opened my own shop. This world we’re in can get pretty dark, so we really try to make our social media a fun and uplifting place you can escape to. Then, if you love us, you can actually escape and come into our magically colorful shop and feel good even for just a little while.
