We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daquesha Chever a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Daquesha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
I had a very sick patient that came to my office to be tested for Covid. I remember walking into his room and seeing the fear on his face when I told him his test was positive. He was miserably weak and his asthma was starting to flare-up. I immediately began discussing the latest treatment options which would decrease his risk of developing a life threatening complication. I knew time was of the essence and we had to act right away. Together with my team we were able to get him the necessary treatment, and he walked out of the office with new hope in his eyes. About 2 weeks later, he surprised us all with lunch with a card attached that read ” Thank you for saving my life.” At that particular time, me and my team were feeling the burnout from Covid, and his kind gesture really meant a lot to us. It felt good knowing we were so important in his recovery.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I am a practicing Board Certified Family Medicine Physician and Urgent Care specialist serving the community in Holly Springs. I am a renowned author, speaker, and consultant. I am recently most proud of my accomplishments as an author having published two books “Step Into Your Destiny” and my latest book “Releasing.” By utilizing my educational background and life experiences I’m able to assist others in releasing their best self. I am also an advocate for raising awareness which promotes physical and mental well being.
Currently, I’m advocating for everyone to inform their family, travel destinations and employers should they contract a communicable disease such as Covid/Monkey Pox/Ect. They can join the movement by “Releasing their best call and decision” without fearing loss of employment or wages, or occurring fees and penalization from cancelled travel. By doing so, we can help reduce the spread of diseases and possibly save lives. The “call” doesn’t stop there. I want anyone that might be experiencing a mental health crisis or having suicidal thoughts to make a call for help. No “shame from sharing.” (Take Action!)

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of my biggest lessons was finding my self-worth and believing my dream of becoming a physician was possible. During college and med school, there were many sleepless nights and moments of self-doubt, but I continued to persevere by concentrating on the end result–becoming an outstanding physician. I learned that in order to persevere and believe in myself, I had to release my fears and self-doubt.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
If somebody had bet me one million dollars that I would I be where I am today when I was a teen, I would have laughed and told them they were flat out crazy. You see, I had absolutely no desire to go to college and, as a matter of fact, like many teenagers, the light at the end of the long tunnel was simply to graduate from high school. So what happened, you ask? Well, it was a chain of events that started with a promise to my parents to go to college after taking a year off to “find myself” after high school graduation. I was surprised how fast that year went, and I was faced once again with making a quality decision.
One day while watching a TV commercial for a career as a medical assistant, I thought, bingo, that would be my dream career and I immediately called the number on the screen. Who would’ve thought that commercial would set in motion the next steps to my destiny? People often talk about being called into a profession. I guess you could say I was also called to become a physician. No, not like many of my peers who say they knew from a young age that they wanted to become a doctor. My calling was different. My calling was set the moment I became a medical assistant. It was a spontaneous feeling of excitement, enjoyment, and fulfillment. I was drawn into the medical world. My first of many achievements was becoming Medical Assistant of the Year for my local county chapter. I went on to apply for my first job, not knowing that I would be at a facility tailored to training new doctors. How ironic was that? It may sound clichéd but, yes, the rest was history. I couldn’t get enough; I was a sponge absorbing all the medical information that I could. I was put in the right place at the right time.
While working there, I became friends with one of the resident physicians and she quickly became my mentor. She encouraged me for the first time to pursue a dream that I was too scared to say aloud. At the age of 21, I quickly found myself enrolled in a four-year university as a premed student. It was a roller coaster ride, but I was strapped in and determined never to give up. I wasn’t first in my class, but my desire to become a physician remained first. My determination was directly due to staying positive and believing in my new self-worth. I had to release fears, anxiety, and rejection along the way. Now that I have made it to where I am, I realize that everything happens for a reason, to never give up or lose hope and to keep pushing forward at all costs. My failures will never outweigh my accomplishments, and I am a true witness that what you set your mind to can happen.
