We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Daphne Welsh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Daphne below.
Hi Daphne, thanks for joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
The moment that started it all. I grew up surround by women’s work and birth work. It’s all I have ever known. Although I have always been passionate about women’s work, I never truly felt “The Call.”
That is until my sister-in-law went into labor earlier than expected with her first baby. She was planning a home birth with my mother and her business partner as her midwives. I never expected to be a part of her birth experience, I was just excited to have a baby niece!
But one early morning in September 2021 my phone rang. My brother was on the other side of the phone telling me to come quick, his wife was in labor. My sister-in-law asked for ME. I sat by her side for 15 hours, feeding her, braiding her hair, holding her hand and giving her words of encouragement. I felt so honored to be part of her birth team and to be one of the ones she called when she was in her most vulnerable and powerful state. The birth space is sacred.
I learned what true love and trust felt like. Ever since I fell in love with birth work and women’s work. I feel “The Call” in every bone in my body, this is the work I am meant to do.

Daphne, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Daphne Welsh, I was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. I love traveling, spending time with family and friends, drinking coffee, and enjoying nature. If I could live outside, I would! I am a Doula, Midwife’s Assistant and soon will be a Certified Fertility Awareness Educator.
As most Women’s Work and Birth Workers know; it isn’t something you just ‘start,’ more often than not, you are ‘called’ to do this work. I was fortunate enough to be born into a world where this work is the norm. My mother and many of my Aunts are birth workers. Like my mother before me, I felt The Call to work with Women.
As a Doula I provide emotional and physical support to women during their birth experience. It is my job to advocate for and support women on their journeys.
As a Midwife’s Assistant I support the Midwife during the prenatal, birth and postpartum experience. Some of my duties include reading basic vital signs, preparing medication, interacting with the mother during birthing, and otherwise assisting the midwife in whatever she may need! The midwife I primarily support is Amanda Counter with Mountain Time Midwifery, she is actually my momma! I feel so grateful to be a part of her birth team and learn from her. It’s truly wonderful to be doing generation work alongside my own mom!
As a Certified Fertility Awareness Educator I will support women by teaching them to track their menstrual cycles and hormone cycles naturally, to either avoid or achieve pregnancy without the use of hormonal birth controls. As well as encourage women to get more in touch with their body’s natural cycles by understanding Body Literacy and Sexual Health Education. I will graduate from my program in January of 2025, once I do, I will be one of three women in the state of Utah to be a Certified Fertility Awareness Educator certified through the AFAP.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely. As I stated before; there are some professions that you are called into. I feel so honored to be the one women turn to as they begin to navigate their new life experiences!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I believe love for women is what takes you the furthest in this profession. You can have the most training in the world, but if your heart and soul aren’t in it, it won’t matter.
