We recently connected with Daphna Shalom and have shared our conversation below.
Daphna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents are immigrants to the US. They are Iranian-born Israelis who moved from Tel Aviv to Los Angeles just a few years before I was born.
Being the child of immigrants and non native English speakers, I was raised to be more independent than most American children (including my own) are being raised today. And with independence, I believe, comes resilience and drive.
Despite the tremendous amount of love we were given, my siblings and I were never overly coddled. The hardships were acknowledged, and feelings were never dismissed, but the way they impacted me most was that they encouraged a sense of independence in me (sometimes because as immigrants they had limitations), but most importantly, they really gave me a strong sense confidence to KEEP GOING. “You can do anything you set your mind to” was the environment I grew up in. And knowing that gave me the tools that I continue to use every day on my journey towards success.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
After about six years of practicing as a PA in Neurology I was itching to create something, and express the artist in me. I took a course in medical aesthetics, and slowly taught myself the dynamics of injectables. Being not only a Virgo who is obsessed with symmetry, but also having a passion in acrylic art, I knew I had found my calling in this industry. The kicker, though, was that I knew standard medical aesthetics was not going to fulfill me. It was too mainstream, and lifeless. I wanted to create something that did not exist in my community, and that was a medical sanctuary where patients had the ability to ask a real provider questions, feel heard, and receive personalized rather than standardized treatments. That is when my greatest pride (after my children, of course), “Beverlywood Med” was established.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I would say that between my family, my friends, and my staff, I am always getting heat for being “too nice” with regards to my business. I will do things like accommodate almost every patient’s schedule, even if it means coming in on my days off, I almost never implement our cancellation policy for last minute cancellations or no-shows, and if a patient isn’t completely satisfied (which is rare), I will do anything and everything to make them happy, even if it means losing tons of time and money.
And so when the people around me rebuke me for being this way aka “too nice”, I remind them that THAT, and mainly that is why my business is as successful as it is. Because besides for my knowledge and expertise, people appreciate that they are not treated like a dime in the bucket, but each one is considered important to our practice. So it’s not that “the patient is always right,” but that each patient is truly important to us.
So I would say, if you’re building a business in service, specifically aesthetics, your success will follow if you learn to love your clients; the good, the bad, and the ugly. Treat them the way you would want to be treated. You can only truly fail if you fail at that. Love and respect breeds love and respect.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honesty, perfectionism and and a lack of greed are what have built my reputation in aesthetics. Luckily I am more a people pleaser and perfectionist than I am a businesswoman. So my patients have quickly learned that their natural look is more important to me than their checkbooks. I will constantly turn people away from treatments that aren’t beneficial to them, and will hardly ever upsell my patients, and this is appreciated by most.
