We were lucky to catch up with Daphna Sebbane recently and have shared our conversation below.
Daphna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Over the years I’ve evolved as a designer and learned that honing your craft involves continuous learning, practice, and refinement of skills. It’s a process of striving for excellence and consistently pushing yourself to grow as a designer. Design is a skill that improves with practice. When I first started freelancing on my own, I explored new techniques and styles until I found one that spoke to me. My work is heavily influenced by old school tattoo art and mysticism. I invested a lot of time in reading and learning about these forms of art to gain experience. It’s important to collaborate and engage with other designers so they can provide opportunities for growth through feedback. I’ve learned through my journey the importance of sharing your work, embracing challenges and always aim to push the boundaries of my creativity.
Daphna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’am a Designer based out in Austin, Texas with over 10 years experience. From a young age, I knew I wanted to get into the arts and hoped to have a career in the creative field. I studied Design at the University of Texas at Austin and started taking client work shortly after.
While I have an understanding of all types of design, my main focus is in branding, and illustration work. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a day job where I utilize my design skills while also designing for my own brand after hours. In my work, I utilize a lot of symbolism and mysticism with a touch of old school tattoo art. I sell a variety of products from prints, stickers, skate decks, notebooks, and more!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I’ve recently thought a lot about this question. There are many aspects that make being a creative super rewarding. When you see your work in the real world, it’s always a cool feeling. I’m always like “dang, I made that!” There is also the idea of bringing a brand identity to life for an up and coming brand. It’s fun being collaborative, innovative, and creating visually stunning design experiences that can leave a lasting impact.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Share your work! I can’t say this enough. Don’t get me wrong, it’s super intimidating at first but it builds confidence and helps you grow. When I first started, I went on this journey of doing daily designs and posting them on social media. I was trying all kinda of styles and had fun with the exploration phase. I was able to develop my own unique style that led me to a number of clients.
