We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dao Vi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dao, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
For me there is no doubt that my parents has made huge positive impacts in my life, even though it’d taken me many years to come to terms and accept that what they have done and the examples they’d set for me and our family has made me the person I am today. One of the many things my parents did right was raising me and my siblings to be followers of Jesus Christ. Being born into a Christian family, there were many things that I had to wrestle with growing up. I think the biggest thing that had always been at the back of my mind growing up as a Christian was figuring out the purpose behind it all. Going to church, reading the bible, praising God, fellowship with other Christians, etc. All of these acts has been so rudimentary for me growing up, so much so that for a long time it became a part of a routine, a routine without purpose, a pursuit without meaning. It wasn’t until COVID where the Lord began working in my heart through my parents. In the hardship my family experienced where my parents weren’t able to work for a few months because of lockdown, they’d still kept their zeal for God and that struck me. Their endless prayers and thanksgiving towards God was what made me realized that despite the hardship, our family was still together and that we were still able to have a place to call home. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28. My parents did right by maintaining their faith towards God and the countless intercession they’ve had for me and my siblings. God has used my parents to help me find purpose and meaning in everything I do, that is to ultimately know Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and glorifying His name in all that i do. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2: 8-10
Dao, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Dao Vi and I am a concept artist and illustrator working in the films and video games industry. My role as a concept artist is to deliver problem solving ideas through visual designs and illustration, Whether that would be figuring out what a fish market that resides amongst the deepest glacier canyon looks like, or a biker helmet of a teen living in a futuristic Los Angeles, I love to bring ideas like these to life through concept art, and hope to spark an inspiration in those who would like to bring their stories to life as well.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist for me is seeing my ideas and stories come to life through the arts that I create and having the luxury of sharing those stories with those around me. Similarly in a professional setting, the most rewarding feeling for me is seeing my concept arts being transformed into a usable asset that directors and designers may use for the final product. The art of transforming an idea into a sketch and seeing it slowly being crafted into the real thing, is one of the many reasons why I love being a concept artist.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My ultimate goal as an artist to be able to somehow bridge the world between art and faith and sharing the good news of the Gospel through the world of art and entertainment. I once visited an event called Painted Worship with a good friend of mine and was captivated by the idea of praising God and glorifying His name through art and music. My mission to bring together artists like me who can sometimes experience loneliness and disconnect from the rest of the world and is also finding a hard time navigating through the world of entertainment towards an understanding that ultimately there is a Provider and Guide who is there to help us in everything that we go through, that is Jesus Christ.
