Today we’d like to introduce you to Danyella Terrell
Hi Danyella, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in 2006 as an intern at Ellisville state school. After graduation, I was hired on at Mississippi Department of Human services. I thought I would retire from the agency, but God had other plans. I earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work in 2011. In 2013, I resigned from my position as Regional Area Social Work Supervisor and began exploring alternative career opportunities. In 2023, I completed the requirements and earned my license to practice independently. Eager to make a positive impact in my community, I immediately went to work. That is the short version of how I got here today!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road? Ha ha, I wish! My journey has been more like a roller coaster with many unexpected loops and detours. After graduating from the Social Work Masters program, I failed my master’s licensure exam three times between 2011 and 2013 – apparently, I was determined to make it a long-term relationship! Finally, I passed it in 2019. Just when I thought I was on to another smooth start with my clinical supervision, COVID happened and delayed everything. What I hoped to wrap up by late 2021 didn’t actually get completed until early 2023. Once I realized my “called” area of practice, there was the process of getting approved to accept insurances. The application process was like visiting a foreign country without a tour guide. So, smooth? Definitely not! But I’ve learned that when you know your ‘why’, you keep pushing forward, bumps, pit stops and all.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice for finding a mentor is to seek out someone whose morals, values, and work ethic resonate with yours. It’s crucial to have a mentor who not only shares your professional aspirations but also upholds the same ethical standards or better. This alignment ensures that when challenges arise, their guidance will be grounded in principles you respect and trust.
While networking broadly is important, prioritize building relationships with individuals who are on a similar growth path. They don’t necessarily need to have the same business plan as you, but they should be equally passionate about personal and professional development. Surround yourself with people who are committed to progressing and evolving, as their drive and direction will inspire and support your own journey
