Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Danyang Song. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Danyang, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Craftsmanship is always crucial in the field of ceramics, and I feel fortunate to have been introduced to the technique of clay 3D printing during my time as a graduate student at RISD. I am delighted that technological advancements are not only applicable to emerging art forms like new media but also rejuvenate traditional materials such as ceramics. I sincerely hope to seamlessly integrate emerging technologies with traditional craftsmanship in my works, aiming to convey modern concepts while promoting the timeless beauty of traditional ceramics.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a ceramic artist and educator, originally from China, now base in New York City. Ceramic art has a long and illustrious history in China. The material of ceramics incorporates various elements such as metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Therefore, I have a strong desire to explore the mysteries inherent in this material. Simultaneously, I am deeply interested in the connection between ceramics and human development. That’s why I chose to pursue a major in ceramic art and design when I went to college.
In my work, I interpret elusive emotions and symbiotic relationships, delving into the Traditional Chinese Humanistic Philosophy of ‘Tian Ren He Yi’. The interconnectedness among humans, nature, and machines is complex yet exquisitely intertwined. I explore how visceral emotions, language, and communication influence our physical reactions, aiming to visualize these intangible sensations. Utilizing different ceramic techniques like coil building, wheel throwing, and ceramic 3D printing, I unravel the enigmatic nature of the human body and society. Employing diverse methods to stress materials, I capture their resistance and embrace outcomes through iterative creation of specific objects. Additionally, I merge 3D printing and hand-building techniques to explore the balance point between contemporary ceramics art and tradotional craftsmanship, crafting serene meditation spaces that invite profound contemplation.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I think I will answer this question from two perspective.
From an emotional perspective, the process of self-expression through art is a deeply healing journey for me. I genuinely desire an outlet to articulate my emotions and feelings. Simultaneously, I aspire to share the therapeutic experience of art with my audience, sparking resonance and encouraging contemplation on their own emotions and feelings.
From the perspective of materials and craftsmanship, as I mentioned earlier, China boasts a long and mature history of ceramic art. I am deeply intrigued by the intricate craftsmanship and production processes of this mysterious material. Traditionally, the creation of ceramic artworks involves a total of 72 steps, with numerous techniques, and the fascinating transformation of glazes. Hence, I believe this art form offers a comprehensive learning experience and continual surprises. I also aspire to bring this niche art form to a wider audience, aiming not only to promote ceramic art culture but also to disseminate traditional Chinese culture. Having studied clay 3D printing technology in the United States, I am eager to explore the potential synergy between emerging technology and traditional ceramic artistry. My goal is to create innovative and culturally significant ceramic artworks that captivate attention and resonate with the spirit of our times.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most valuable aspect of being an artist or creative is the freedom of expression and unimpeded communication. The language of art knows no boundaries of nationality or age, allowing what I wish to convey and express to reach a broader audience, resonating with people and inspiring thoughts and conversations. The process of creation itself, the acquisition of new techniques, and the exploration of novel concepts continually propel my growth and introspection, providing a deeper understanding of myself.
Moreover, I believe that the appreciation and visibility of artistic works serve as a bridge for emotional connections among strangers. Unbeknownst to me, in different times and spaces, my creations may have brought empowerment and joy to some individuals, and this inherent significance is truly priceless.
