We caught up with the brilliant and insightful D’Anthony Lorenzo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
D’Anthony, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned to sing by just flowing I guess. When I would listen to music I would always mimic the artist singing. It was good practice and slowly shaped me into the way I sound now. Of course my vocal style is still growing and expanding into my own but it’s really helped me. I don’t really think there was anyway to speed up the process. It kind just comes overtime, and people learn it at different speeds. The skills that were most essential were definitely listening. When doing this you need a really good ear. For harmonies, pitch, and technique. Unless your born a prodigy or like have pitch perfect. The obstacle that stood in my way during this whole process was my influences for vocals. I listened to a lot of artist that are in a high vocal range. So it was difficult when I went through puberty and lost my range. I had to figure out how to use the technique I had but with a lower register. Especially when that register was used for a high range.
D’Anthony, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So I am an American Singer from Massachusetts. I got into the music industry pretty recently I would say, in fact within the last 2 years. I have been doing music for close to a decade now but I didn’t release my first song until April of 2020. What I think sets me apart is my attitude and my drive towards my goal. From where I’m from, there are not people who have the same goals as me. That makes it pretty hard to make real friends or share what I’m doing with other people. I’m most proud of my recently released self titled Sophomore album “DANTHONY LORENZO”. There are 12 songs on it with a mix of Pop and R&B vibes, and it has top tier features from Veneno Official, Exhale Taop, and E. Miller. The main thing I want my fans to know about me is that I’m always listening to feedback to improve my craft.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society can best support artists by showing it I guess. There’s plenty of people who just never want to see anyone do well In life. Its a miserable and sad thing, because do you really have to drag someone down because you don’t like something that is theirs? Society can be so much better If people help other people by telling them what they can improve and in some cases it could just be a simple opinion.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The reaction of my fans or newer listeners. I love the stats of new people listening and then returning listeners. When I do shows I love how the crowd yells back my lyrics to me, in those moments I just stand back and embrace it.
