We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DanShay Martinez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, DanShay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
One of the best managers/ bosses I have ever had is Julie Gallahue. I appreciate her so much because she was one of the first people so really see something in me. She also always to push me to do my absolute best in all aspects of modeling and life. One day, Julie an I had a meeting at starbucks and that day genuinely changed my life. This was the day when Julie told me how much potential she seen in me. How far she thought I could go. One of my favorite things that she said was that modeling goes way farther than just ones looks, its goes into what type person you are, how you carry yourself and how you handle situations, and those where some of the few things that made worthy for her management. Ever since that conversation, I have done the most I could have possibly done so far. I have traveled the world, multiple states, faced international and national magazines, walked plenty of runways, had plenty of photoshoots and made some of the best connections. She truly impacted me because she made me realize my worth, how special and unique I actually am.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is DanShay Martinez. I have been modeling in the Denver area for about 7 years. I started out with the modeling school called Barbizon, which is now called SouthWest Model and Talent, SWMT. They honestly taught me so much useful information that I use for modeling today. The simple things like walking, model attire, what to carry in your model bag, what color to paint your nails, how to wear your hair, how to do your makeup, how to slate, a lot of different helpful information. After I graduated from Barbizon, I was signed to them. I was really excited to get actually jobs from them but unfortunately I did not get much. Some of my Barbizon friends were telling me about Denver Fashion Week ,DFW, casting and that I should go with them. We went and Tyne Hall picked me to walk for her segment. Then after DFW Julie Gallahue reached out to me to have a meeting. Tyne and I have been working together ever since. Same with Julie and I.
The type of work that I provide is creating content that one has envisioned and would love to make it into reality.
What I am most proud of never giving up even to all the no’s. The no’s made me want to prove people wrong. It made it more dedicated to perfecting my craft. Also to never give up no matter how hard it gets. It’s hard making connections, it’s hard to get paid gigs, it’s hard to get signed, but I was never discouraged to give up. It only made me a stronger, resilient individual.
Something I want potential supporters to know about me is I am very divergent, dedicated to my craft. I love doing as much as I possibly can. I love pushing myself to my limits and also getting out of my comfort zone, Sometimes you have to create new boundaries to grow and succeed.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One of the things that I wish I knew earlier about is to not be scared to reach out about wanting more for yourself. You really have to advocate for you and your future because the future is in your hands no-one else’s. Do not be scared to make people mad, to upset their feelings because you want different or better. Your goals and dreams are way more important
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The main mission that is driving, the empowers me to be successful is my oldest brother, Shawntez, may he Rest In Peace. My brother had so much faith in me and beileved I can go so far in modeling. I want to fulfill his faith in me.
