We recently connected with Danny Spears and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Danny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In order to be successful, you can’t be afraid of failure. Usually your first instinct is the one that is correct. My viewpoint on what it means to be successful was developed by watching other people fail. I worked for others for many, many years before I worked for myself. I noticed that what they cared about was the bottom line, rather than about integrity of the product or satisfaction of the client. Working for others made me realize that you must always go above and beyond to create a beautiful product that both functions perfectly and lasts forever. We create luxury, timeless, family homes that are made to last for generations. I have shaped my own career with the notion of not being afraid of failure, and making sure each project I work on exceeds the client’s expectations, first and foremost.
Danny, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always been passionate about building, planning, and creating spaces ever since I was a child. I was recruited into the industry at 15 years old, and was told to sink or swim. For my first experience at work, I was dropped off at a job site where I worked on a framing project for a local builder. Unlike most of the construction workers, I did not speak Spanish, which was a big hindrance for the job. I realized that in order to be successful, I needed to learn and adapt to my surroundings. I taught myself to speak and read Spanish, and within six months could proficiently speak and communicate with my colleagues.
I started this company in 2010 with zero capital – all I had was four men and a beat up truck. I had to convince my men that they could build houses. I encouraged my team to think outside the box and pushed them to do what had never been done before.
I truly have a desire for perfection. For every house we build, we want the end result to be as close to perfect as possible. Now, we are one of the top luxury residential homebuilding firms in the Austin area, with a large client base that truly feels like family.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Captex Construction was built on honesty, trust, integrity, and transparency. In Austin, we are known for creating luxury homes that stand the test of time and delivering a high-quality product in half the time it takes other builders. A home is one of the biggest investments you can make in your lifetime, and we want our clients to feel comfortable every step of the way. I love driving through the streets of Austin and seeing the incredible homes we built for our very happy clients.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
The biggest advice I have for managing a team is to always put your people before yourself. I treat my team like my own family and always make sure their needs are taken care of. We spend a lot of long hours together doing physical labor, and having a positive attitude is key. Maintaining a high company morale is one of my biggest goals. I always encourage them to strive for excellence and provide constructive feedback.
