Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Danny Marciano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Danny, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I started writing songs and books to entertain other inmates or people in rehab. I had no idea that anything I ever wrote would be seen outside those walls. I would make costumes out of cardboard and write plays and get the other people to join in. We had nothing else to do and a lot of time. I wrote some letters and poems to my daughter that I had become estranged from. I was locked up shortly after she was born and didn’t make it back to San Diego for a few years. Thankfully my sister had saved all of my writing. I ended up back on the streets and wouldn’t see those letters for many years.
I got the writing back and rewrote some of it into a children’s book that was published and got my first taste of success.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am now a children’s entertainer. I am a Los Angeles Recording Academy Member and Actor. I will be touring the San Diego Library’s this summer. I will be at 16 different libraries performing my music. I will also be at the OC Book festival. I have made a career that began in a time that I had no resources. I’ve taken that and made a difference in people’s lives. I’ve worked on many TV shows and movies as well. I will have a new album out soon. The band is a labor of love and I wanted to show people despite differences in appearance or hardships in your life you can still recover and make a difference. I had the honor of presenting a workshop on diversity and inclusion for the CMN annual conference. ( Children’s Music Network) It’s on my website.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a heavily tattooed ex-con I haven’t been embraced by professional or mainstream society and that was honestly never a goal of mine. Here I am embraced by the creative community and of all communities the Kindie (Kids Indie) community. I had a very hard time adjusting to society and didn’t quite find my place until I found the children’s entertainment world.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I applied for a job for over 2 years with no luck. I was laughed at. Wearing a turtleneck and gloves in summer (covering up my tattoos) on the bus looking for a job. I will never forget the humiliation I endured every time I’m on set or on stage.
