We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DaNisha Greene a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi DaNisha, thanks for joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I definitely wish I had started my business earlier. Although in January I will have been in business for 15 years. However, I feel if I had started sooner that I would have been much farther along into where I’d want to be at in my career. After graduating college I was more focused on trying to work in television production because that’s what my degree is in and then just getting stuck working entry level jobs in corporate America. Fashion was always my hobby but I had no idea that there were career possibilities for me to pursue. I was unable to move around initially like I desired because I chose to help my maternal grandmother raise my very young siblings. However I know that even when it seems you are going through a setback you’re actually being set up for better.

DaNisha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started in the fashion industry professionally in January 2010. However, personally I have been a lover of fashion my entire life. While in high school I took photography and did my first photoshoot as a model for one of my classmates and wore a dress my friend made in home economics. Then while an undergraduate at Fisk University, I creatively direct two homecoming fashion shows. My cousin was an artist and doing another music video for a new song. After seeing his previous video I insisted on casting models and styling them with pieces from local designers. I then asked some of my friends in the beauty industry to offer hair and makeup services for the video models. Ironically I didn’t even know that I should’ve been focused on styling him as the key artist & the other 2 who were actually featured on the song.
My work has been published not only nationally in magazines such as Nylon, The Cut, New York Magazine, Purple Fashion Magazine, Office, Mith Magazine, Coeval Magazine, Elegant, Hunter, Katwalk, Style Maven, 17:23, 7 Hues, Picton, Flawless Magazine, Ellements, Pattern, Editorial QC, Vibrant, Couture Living, Mode, Fusion and Unzipped. As well as internationally in L’ Officiel, Vogue Italia, Elle Italia, GMaro, Moevir, Le Fonte Journal, Croatian magazine Lepota i Zdravlje, African magazine Adunagow and Australian magazine Mildred. I also styled national campaigns for retail stores such as CitiTrends and brands such as Catou, Pierre Phillip Shoes, Michael Alan Stein, Poppy Seeds, Elan Furs and Nikki Blaine Couture. I have also been the Fashion Show Director for Midwest Fashion Week for the past 12 years. She’s also the Fashion Director for Vivien Jackson Couture.
I have also worked many times not only as a fashion producer, director and stylist during New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week but also various fashion events and productions in South Africa, L.A, Chicago and Las Vegas. My expertise lead me to be chosen to style for Grammy nominated artists and producers for the 65th annual Recording Academy Awards Show.
I have built genuine personal connections with various types of creatives within the industry and leverage those connections for the greater benefit of everyone in my network. I continue to uplift and empower disadvantaged communities by participating and assisting in producing charity fashion shows, provide prom makeovers to homeless and underprivileged teens, fashion and beauty workshops to foster care teens and offer volunteer and internship opportunities to teens in otherwise overlooked and underserved areas during NYFW as well as other major fashion productions.
I recently started my own production company in October 2023, Seeing Greene Productions, and was recently featured in a film festival in September 2024 for one of the short films I did. I also directed one music video for a female rap artist. It’s just me currently but I’m still building and growing it slowly. I’ve always loved telling the behind the scenes stories of people and especially creatives as I’ve meet so many with interesting journeys. I will continue to work on various projects such as short films, documentaries, tv series and other creative content while navigating in the fashion industry.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe that my consistent reliability, efficiency and ability to pivot in situations that are out of my control. Yet still being able to ensure a professional and calm environment for everyone involved while delivering the expected outcome. Are some of the key reasons that helped build my reputation in the fashion industry.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative for me is when I receive unexpected inboxes, emails, text messages and see social media posts from other creatives in the industry. For example various designers, makeup artists, hairstylists, visual artists, photographers, models and or fashion stylists tell me how I gave them their first start or scouted them out from an unrelated industry. They’ve also reminded me how I’ve talked to them about reaching out to me after maybe graduating if I meet them as a student or let them intern or volunteer backstage or behind the scenes with me while being a newcomer to get hands on experience in the industry. Encouraging words and or advise I’ve given to them because I thought they’d be great in a more creative space. Not gatekeeping information and or sharing resources for them to be successful. As well when they remind me of how I positively impacted the direction of their lives.
