Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Danielle Turner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Danielle , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you ever experienced a times when your entire field felt like it was taking a U-Turn?
The biggest U-Turn I have seen over the past few years in the mental health field came during the pandemic. The pandemic made us slow down, stay home and be with ourselves. This gave individuals time to think, reflect and recognize the symptoms of anxiety and depression. they have or had been experiencing. Being with ourselves may have also brought up prior unaddressed trauma for many individuals. During the pandemic more awareness was made on self-care and self-care became somewhat of a buzz word. This shift in self-recognition of mental wellness challenges and lack of self-care, resulted in an increase in individuals seeking counseling services.
There has been a huge influx of referrals for therapy services and individuals seeking assistance with learning better self-care techniques. This has put a strain on the mental health field and difficulty with finding mental health providers. Because of this, I have had to make some adjustments, shifts and pivots within my own practice, to be more accessible to the community. I have increased business hours, offered more services and products within my self-care coaching space and currently working on growing my solo therapy practice into a group practice to offer more therapeutic services. Inner You Clinical Services will begin to offer family, children, couples and group therapy services along with individual therapy services to keep up with the demands for services in the community.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the CEO and owner of Inner You Clinical Services, LLC. I am a licensed clinical social worker, podcast host, best-selling author and self-care advocate where all things self-care are reset, refocus, renew and restart. I currently offer individual mental health therapy services to adults age 18 and older who reside in the State of Connecticut.
I also offer one to one self-care coaching to individuals who are struggling with prioritizing themselves, who are feeling overwhelmed with life and who have limited beliefs that are resulting in a negative mindset towards self-care. My signature 4 step coaching program helps individuals work through limited beliefs and develop a self-care plan that is achievable and sustainable. Coaching services are for individuals who reside both in and outside of Connecticut. I am also the creator of two self-care workbooks: The Ultimate Inner You Morning Mindset Workbook and The Ultimate Inner You Self-Care Workbook.
You can hear me discuss a variety of topics on mental health, wellness and self-care on my podcast The Purple Butterfly Podcast which is streamed on your favorite podcast platform. I have expert guest that talk about all thing’s wellness and of course self-care. The Purple Butterfly Podcast is what I am most proud of. I started the podcast so that I could have a voice for others who may not be able to speak up about their overall wellness and self-care. I wanted a platform where I could share my expert advice and knowledge on self-care as well as to be able to have other experts in various fields share their expertise and knowledge.
Inner You Clinical Services LLC was born in 2018 after seeing a need for mental health therapy services within my community where clients are seen, heard and understood. Where they would have a safe space to heal and to work on the connection between mind, body and spirit. A place where community members would be able to let their hair down per se and know that they could discuss any issues from past to present that are weighing them down.
In 2021, I added self-care coaching services as my brand is all about self-care. My mission is to help others learn the value of self-care and how self-care can impact their lives in a positive way. We live our best lives when we are taking care of ourselves and prioritizing our needs.
What sets me apart is my authenticity, transparency and ability to learn from my clients. I learn as much from my clients as they learn from me. I also have experienced mental wellness challenges which makes me relatable. Representation can be everything, most people are going to seek out individuals who have had their same experience when seeking help. It is important for me to be the model. mentor and voice for others like myself who are suffering with their mental wellness.
The Inner You Clinical Services LLC brand is about transformation, healing and growth. It is about learning ways to move through mental wellness challenges with the help of self-care. Butterflies are incorporated into the logo as butterflies represent transformation and growth. Butterflies struggle through each stage of their lives. The same with healing. Each stage of healing comes with struggles and growing pains. When the growing pains are done, out comes something beautiful.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my reputation comes from being authentic and transparent. I also like to have fun and love to laugh, so my bubbly personality helps as well. Often times individuals will see me in the community and not necessarily know my name but know that I am the “self-care lady” or the person with the podcast with butterflies. Although I am not a big fan of social media, I had to step out my comfort zone and show up. Showing up and showing my personality with my tik toks, creating short videos with self-care tips, creating post for my self-care group has been instrumental in helping me build my reputation. I also show up in my community by giving back, attending events and ensuring that Inner You Clinical Services is part of the community in general. As a business owner you are your brand, and your brand is your reputation. I make sure that I show up, that I am authentic, that I share my story both good and bad and just be me in every room that I walk into.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
For me, I feel what is most helpful in being successful in mental health field outside of training and knowledge, is actually being a person.
When you see a therapist on television, a lot of times there is a client laying on a sofa and the therapist is writing on a note pad asking, “so how does that make you feel.” I am not that therapist or coach. I allow my clients both therapy clients and coaching clients to know that I am human. I show emotions with my clients, I engage with them, I learn with them, I cry with them, and I laugh with them. I cheer them on and celebrate their wins with them. For me it is important to allow my clients to know that I too have a life outside of being a therapist, that I can relate to their struggles and have done my own healing work to get to the place where I am now.
Yes we all need some kind of formal training/knowledge but sometimes the best training is hands on, being yourself and allowing your clients to feel safe in their therapeutic relationship so that they can heal and grow.
