Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Danielle Sheree Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Danielle Sheree, thanks for joining us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?

One unexpected business problem I had at DSB Solutions was terminating a client.

It was unexpected because 1) The Client PAID very well, 2) it had an incredible mission, and 3) The Client PAID on time. I would say a “perfect” client.

Here is the story,

DSB Solutions worked with the Client for several years, providing annual tax preparation services.

During that course of business, we recommended policies and procedures to help the business maintain an “A” audit rating. Suppose the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) or any funder came to question the money. In that case, they would have a proper paper trail (documentation) for every penny spent, avoiding wasted money and time.

One day, the Executive Director contacted me and said they needed DSB Solutions Fiscal Management services to help manage a Grant they were awarded. The grant was over $300,00.00. They needed help managing the financial piece of the grant, and DSB Solutions was here to help. I met with the Executive Director at the start of our agreement to break down and address non-profit cost principles, segregation of duties, allocation plans, and more, hoping previous recommendations were implemented.

The Executive Director assured me there was nothing to worry about. But, while managing the grant, I learned that the Client did not implement one recommendation. The Client lacked policies and procedures. The Client lacked proper board governance. The Client was not timely submitting program reports. They missed essential deadlines. And they paid for expenses that were never in the approved budget. To make it worse, they did not take action when we discussed possible consequences and the severity of those consequences (i.e., penalties, interest, business closure).

DSB Solutions prides itself on helping our clients, and one thing we will never do is serve a client for the sake of making money – in my eyes, we were not helping them get “better.” DSB Solutions terminated the contract instead of continuing to take the money from the Client.

Let me say this: The unexpected business problem resulted in DSB Solutions having a timeline of service. If a client does not grow, improve, or change for the better within three (3) years –DSB Solutions will evaluate the Client to see if services should continue.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

It is funny you asked this because I just finished publishing a book, “Pursuing the Heart of God Through Business: An Introduction.”

Without going too much into the book, before I would have said it was
• Being Knowledgeable of Business, Finance, and Taxes – staying relevant and up-to-date
• Excellent customer service, caring and kindness to every Client we serve.

But now I know that the reputation of DSB Solutions was built on God, staying on top of our game, doing great work, and providing excellent customer service.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?

A near-death experience for my business –

After having the break, nothing mattered to me for a while – I just wanted to get better and be a mother to my children.

Long story short, I was beyond burn-out and did not care about serving any more.

Business is about serving, and I questioned myself. I no longer wanted to serve or trusted my mind to serve but God!
