We recently connected with Danielle Marcus and have shared our conversation below.
Danielle , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
For me it was moving to a new place. The cost of keeping my business and space going while meeting new clients. It’s challenging to meet new people. It takes a lot of effort and energy to promote a new business to a new area. I do enjoy it very much. It just takes time to have a client base that can support the business enough to make it profitable.

Danielle , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been in the industry for 20 years. I worked on Newbury St. in Boston for most of those years. I loved the time I spent at the salon not that I helped run but had a wonderful clientele. I decided over time to start my own small business to have more freedom and flexibility. To live a softer life. I moved to Nashville with the dream to create a successful business here. I have enjoyed the friendliness of the city and I think it matches well with the softer approach to hairstyling. I specialize in women’s haircuts, color, and special occasion styling. I love building a trusting relationship with a client, that is caring, not only about their hair but themselves as well.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
It’s really just getting out there and making genuine connections with people you enjoy talking with. Telling them about what you do and learning about them.

Have you ever had to pivot?
When I decided to leave the salon I worked at in Boston it was simply burn out. I didn’t want to do the 10-12 hour days, and the lifestyle of the business anymore. I wanted more to myself to be able to give more to my clients. To create a more relaxed environment. Where we would have the time and space to focus on them.
