We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Danielle Harter (kaufman) a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Danielle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
“If you wouldn’t trust the person injecting your face to take care of you in an emergency… you’re in the wrong chair.”
All too often I see corrective consultations on patients that go to “Botox parties” or a “cheap” injector in the hopes of saving money. Listen, I get it, injectables and cosmetic treatments are an investment, a luxury and an elective choice. The power you hold as a consumer to choose your injector is tremendous, and should not be taken lightly by you as the patient. Aesthetic Injectables are very much medical procedures, medications and can have detrimental complications if not performed correctly. Even if performed completely pristine- these medical treatments carry a risk of complications that require an experienced, confident and competent medical provider to care for you during the complication phase.
I always tell my patients to let me do the worrying for them when it comes to their procedures because I am confident I can guide their care in the event of a complication.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi- I’m Danielle. A native of Southwestern Pennsylvania and a certified Physician Associate since 2008! My love affair with Medicine started as a young child- my “career” video in first grade was me dressed as a doctor giving my baby sister a shot! Fast forward to my teenage years and you could find me concocting face masks out of a raw egg mixture I found in Cosmopolitan Magazine or chatting on AOL IM as SpaQueen119. It’s funny how self-fulfilling prophecies have a way of finding us in the end! Even in PA school I used to say how cool it would be to own a MedSpa… and now, here I am- doing it!
My career as a PA started in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, first-assisting in the OR for almost five years on a variety of cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries are still some of my most favorite years as a PA! I got tired of early morning OR schedules, but my obsession with the edge of Medicine where Science meets Art grew fiercely over the years while I continued in cosmetic injectables. But something was missing… I’ve had the entrepreneurial bug since high school constantly treating jobs as my own business ventures and always striving for excellent customer service. I continually felt the pull to branch out on my own and start creating a culture and space where my patients could feel valued, cared for and peaceful; and where I and my team could feel ignited and inspired. Opening my aesthetics business Artistry Luxury Injectables has not only been a massive dream realized but has simultaneously been the best and the hardest venture I have ever done…. and I’m just getting started!

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Aesthetic Medicine is never about sales. You come to work full, you don’t need to sell any of your patients anything. Rather, my job as an Aesthetic Medicine provider is to recommend treatment plans that will provide the best and most ethical outcomes for my patients. I often refer for treatments I can’t offer- I don’t see that as turning away money- I see that as creating the best possible plan and outcome for my patient. And my patients are loyal to me because of the ethical, responsible and compassionate care they receive in my chair.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Hands down my most important reputation builder are patient referrals and consistent patient care which creates happy and ongoing patient relations that provide word of mouth referrals. Marketing in my field is so saturated and with the Aesthetic market flooded with poorly trained providers or those seeking to get rich off cosmetic treatments, word of mouth and trust is vital for success in my industry. Retention and referrals are the most important aspect of my business.
