We were lucky to catch up with Danielle Evans recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
When I first became a certified Personal Trainer, I interviewed for a position as an independent trainer with a company called Texas Fit Chicks. It is a company geared towards helping women reach their fitness goals through strength training in boot camp style. There were a few phone interviews and a virtual interview meeting with a few instructors in the local area. I was instructed to scout out a location to hold the fitness classes and the members would sign up to come. At the time, I had little to no experience and was a nervous, but I knew that this would be a great way to step into the fitness world. I worked with Texas Fit Chicks for almost two years while I was in undergrad. I genuinely enjoyed my time getting to know different women and their walks of life, and their “why”. It helped me to grow comfortable with teaching a group of people and to understand a different demographic a bit better. I am grateful for that experience because it showed me my niche in the industry. Helping to make women feel more confidently fit inside and out.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always been pretty active as a kid. As I grew older, going to middle school and high school, I enjoyed playing sports and being on the dance team. So being active became a part of my lifestyle at a young age. I enjoy working out as a part of fitness, but also as a way to manage my own stress levels. Outside of being a trainer, I work in mental health, which can play a role in managing my own mental health and emotions. With me having a background in psychology, it provides me a different way of getting to know my client’s on a deeper level, mentally and spiritually. I am someone who not only wants to help my client’s become healthier physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The brand I created is called Better Naked. It is about bringing everything to the forefront of what brought the client to me in the first place. Being Naked, and stripping them of all the unhealthy bad habits to be a healthier version of themselves.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Prior to growing the brand Better Naked fitness, I originally used the name Project Fitness. I am not sure where I got this name from, but I remember thinking it would be great. I remember creating a logo and even hosting fitness classes with the name. However, something about the name just didn’t sit well with me. It didn’t provide a connection with me or my clients, so decided to take a step back and just focus on rebuilding my clientele, without a name. I decided to work in other gyms and promote myself as just a personal trainer. Overtime, I realized that people do workout to feel and look better naked. No matter the age, the walk of life, or their “why”. People really want to look and feel good. So I began to research and rebuild a foundation for Better naked Fitness. This brand name flows so effortlessly and it is so catchy. Once I was able to say it confidently, the brand started to grow itself. From fitness classes, to apparel, it might still be a small business, but it is certainly growing at a pace that feel promising. I use this as an example for resilience because I didn’t give up. I allowed myself and my brand to recalibrate into something more meaningful.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes, of course. I love what I do. I love meeting with women who feel their life is to busy to workout or eat right. The Busy Mom, is my favorite type of client because there is always time to have for yourself, it is just about how you use it. I think for me, it is about implementing what may seem impossible. I work with my client’s schedule to ensure they are able to accomodate the training and then we work to see how we can help one another reach their goal. I honestly wouldn’t do anything different except gather resources earlier to grow the brand, but I believe everything is all in God’s timing.
