Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Danielle Desir Corbett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Danielle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
Launching a new podcast, I would strategically consider monetizing even before recording. I started monetizing my podcast, The Thought Card, out of necessity. I was burnt out and desperately wanted to hire an editor to remove time-consuming tasks from my plate. I do not recommend waiting. You can monetize a podcast via sponsorships (yes, even if you haven’t launched yet), digital products like eBooks and courses, Patreon or paid memberships, affiliate marketing, and more. Through trial and error, my top income streams as a podcaster include sponsorships and affiliate marketing. I love connecting my listeners with resources that will improve their lives.
Danielle, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a multi-passionate writer, podcast marketing coach, and host of The Thought Card, an affordable luxury travel and personal finance podcast empowering financially savvy travelers to travel more and build wealth. I launched my podcast in 2018 to connect more deeply with my already existing audience as a blogger and make a name for myself in the travel and personal finance industry. As a podcaster, I’m proud to have an engaged audience who enjoys my content. I have also partnered with brands like Expedia, Hilton, Citizens Bank, and others. In 2018, I also created WOC Podcasters (Women of Color), a podcasting community dedicated to amplifying and providing resources to Women of Color in the audio industry. Women make up less than 29% of podcasts. As a community organizer, I’ve worked with hundreds of podcasters, teaching them how to launch, grow and monetize strategically. While most podcast coaches focus on getting started, I specialize in podcast growth, supporting my 1:1 coaching clients as they build authority, nurture a growing audience and create lucrative income streams.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
In addition to creating high-quality and valuable content, collaboration is key! Appearing as a podcast guest and speaking at events and conferences are two ways I have built my reputation and an audience.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a creator and small biz owner, pivoting is an essential skill to learn. Knowing yourself and keeping a pulse on what’s working (and not) will help you make informed decisions. Most recently, after finding out I was expecting my first child, I knew I couldn’t continue to manage and promote two paid podcasting communities, so I decided to remove the tiers. Having one paid space means focusing on serving all my members equally and allocating energy and effort to promoting one product that aligns with my mission and life as a new mom. Simplicity is underrated.
