We were lucky to catch up with Danielle Curtis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Danielle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
I used to think that family members and friends would and should immediately support you with no questions asked. I had to learn that just because they are close to you doesn’t mean they will automatically support you or even like what you do. When I first started my blog, I would practically beg my family/friends for support, but now I cringe at the thought.
After being told that supporting me on social media would bring an unwanted change to their own algorithm, I realize if people WANT to support you, they will.
Danielle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my food and travel blog by “mistake”. I’ve always loved writing and my blog started out as a mere way to release my thoughts and feelings. I added a picture of food to one of my blogs and it took off from there!
I love sharing my food and travel adventures. Eating and traveling is what I do best, so why not pass those experiences along to people who may not know those places exist or to some who just want to vicariously live through others experiences.
Working with travel companies and restaurants is so rewarding because (1) it allows me to add to my blog, while enjoying the benefits, and (2) it creates exposure for said businesses.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Being authentic! People want authenticity and relatability. Your audience can see right through f*ke content. You want your followers to feel more like friends. And you can build a community by being honest, informative, and your true genuine self.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is bringing information to people that want to experience more of what I offer. I absolutely love hearing someone say “I’ve lived here all my life and didn’t know that restaurant was there!” Or “I’ve been looking for the perfect hotel for vacation and you posted just the right spot!”
